2.5: Installing LPP's remotely

2.5.1: - Optional items
2.5.2: - Getting started with Motif

The amount of space that you have on your hard disk/s affects the number of lpp's that you can install. If you run out of space during an install or update, unpredictable results may occur which include the possibility of needing a complete reinstall. The network install is simply an easy method of providing code to your machine. You need to ensure that you have enough space to accept the code that will be sent.

To install additional lpps, do the following:

  1. /usr/prod/local/bin/service

  2. Select the install option and press Enter when told to do so.

  3. Select appropriate lpp's.

Note: MANual pages can be mounted remotely which will save space.

2.5.1: Optional items

  1. If you want to have a default Motif window configured for you, do the following (after installing aixwin):

    /usr/prod/local/bin/service

Select the "Configure Motif" option and press Enter when told to do so. Do this as your own userid and not root.

  2. If you want any other service options, do the following:

    /usr/prod/local/bin/service

Select the appropriate option and press Enter when told to do so.

  3. Edit /etc/hosts.lpd and add hosts that can do printing on your machine. See the printing section in the NER AIX User's Guide.

2.5.2: Getting started with Motif

If you executed the "Configure Motif" option as shown above, you will be able to bring up a Motif session (if you have installed it) by typing in win when you are in your HOME directory.

You can change what pops up on your Motif session by editing win in your HOME directory. The information to change is at the bottom of the file.

The default colors and settings can be changed by editing .Xdefaults in your HOME directory.

Clicking and holding the right mouse button on the background shows the motif root menu. Letting up on the button executes what is under the mouse cursor. This menu can be changed by editing .mwmrc in your HOME directory.

Clicking both mouse buttons in the scrollbar part of an aixterm field gives scrollbar options.

Clicking the right mouse botton while holding down the left control button when inside an aixterm window gives you the settable aixterm variables.

Clicking the left mouse botton while holding down the left control button when inside an aixterm window gives you the settable aixterm modes.

You can use cut and paste features inside an aixterm window to reenter a command. Move up to the line you want to reissue. Press the left mouse button at the start of the line, keep the button down and move to the end of the line and release the button. The line will now be in the input area where it can be altered or executed.

Each window has a -, ., and square in the top box. Clicking the left mouse button on the - will allow you to alter the characteristics of the current window. Clicking on the . will iconify the window and clicking on the square will enlarge the window.

Clicking the right mouse button on the scrollbar will move the window view up or down so that you can see what was previously displayed.

The xeyes display is a way to find your mouse cursor easily. The eyes always look in the direction of the mouse cursor.

Your Motif session can be locked using xnlock. Bring up the root menu by depressing the right mouse button on the background. Put the mouse cursor on the client field. Keeping the button depressed, move it to xnlock and then release it. The xnlock screen should appear. To regain your session, press Enter and then enter your password when the timer appears.
