Using Dial-In Modems

Modems are devices that transmit serial data over telephone lines and can be used with several different functions. This section deals with modems for use with telnet or rlogin.

For information on modems used with SLIP or PPP, see "7318 Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)".

Installing Dial-In Modems

To connect a modem to the 7318:

1. Use a straight-through cable and the "modem adapter," feature code 7903 or equivalent. See "Connector Pinouts" for information on pinouts and wiring diagrams.
2. Plug in and turn on the modem.

Configuring the Dial-In Modem

Some modems can be programmed and have the parameters saved across power cycles; others need to be programmed each time they are powered on. Refer to the product information for your modem to find your modem's requirements and capabilities.

There are several ways to properly program the modem. They are as follows:

1. Configure the switches on the modem (if it has switches).
2. Attach a terminal to the modem, issue the proper command sequences to the modem, and save the parameters in the modem's nonvolatile memory. If you use this method, you do not need to program the modem each time it is used.
3. Similar to item 2, the 7318 can be configured for dial-in or dial-out capability. To set up the modem, you can use telnet to connect a host session to the modem to issue the configuration commands. Then save the configuration as desired.
4. When the 7318 is powered on and the port is opened or reset, use the initstring option in the 7318 configuration file to send the modem its configuration commands.

The 7318 configuration file should be set up for the modem.
