TP 365X/XD - Installing Windows NT 4.0 and its device drivers

Applicable to: World-Wide

This document provides instructions for installing Windows NT 4.0 Workstation on your IBM ThinkPad 365XD. The installation procedure is based on installing Windows NT onto a blank, formatted hard drive using the internal CD-ROM drive on the ThinkPad. If you are going to be installing Windows NT from an external CD-ROM drive, click here for instructions.

Create the installation diskettes of the device drivers using the Diskette Factory program. You need to create at least the following device driver diskettes:

Device Driver

Diskette Name

ThinkPad Configuration program

Utility Package for Windows NT

Personalization Editor Data Diskette

Display driver

Video Features Package for Windows NT

PC Card support software

PC Card Director for Windows NT

Audio device driver

Audio Features Package for Windows NT

Infrared device driver

Infrared Driver Package for Windows NT

Note: If you have already formatted the hard drive, you can download these drivers by clicking on the links in the table above.

Installing Windows NT 4.0 Workstation
1.) Insert the boot setup disk into the floppy drive and turn the computer on.
2.) When prompted, insert disk two.
3.) At the Windows NT Workstation Setup window, you will be given a list of options. To continue with the installation, press Enter.
4.) At the next window, it states that it will automatically detect floppy controllers and hard drives. Press Enter to continue. When prompted, insert disk three.
5.) It will then say that it has detected the following device: IDE CD-ROM <ATAPI 1.2>/PCI IDE Controller. Press Enter to continue.
6.) Read through the licensing agreement (use the PAGE DOWN key to read the entire agreement). When finished you are prompted to hit the F8 key to agree or ESC if you do not agree. If you agree, press the F8 key to continue.
7.) It will then give you a list of hardware and software components:

Computer: Standard PC
Display: Auto Detect
Keyboard: XT, AT, or Enhanced Keyboard <83-104 keys>
Keyboard Layout: US
Pointing Device: Microsoft Mouse Port Mouse <includes BallPoint>

Make sure No Changes: The above list matches my computer is highlighted and press Enter to continue.

8.) It will then show the existing partitions on your hard drive. Make sure the drive you want to install Windows NT on is highlighted (if you only have one partition then there will only be one drive to select) and press Enter.
9.) It will then prompt you to select the type of file system you want to install on the hard drive. You have the following options:

Format the partition using the FAT file system
Format the partition using the NTFS file system
Convert the partition to NTFS
Leave the current file system intact <no changes>

Select one of the options above and press Enter to continue (if you are installing Windows NT on top of your current operating system, then you will want to select one of the last two options). If you selected one of the first two options, it will warn you that formatting your hard drive will erase all data on your hard drive. If you wish to continue, press F to format the hard drive. If you selected to convert the partition to NTFS it will give you a warning that the drive will be inaccessible to any operating system other than Windows NT. If you wish to continue press C.

10.) If you selected to format the partition, you will be prompted for the installation location after the formatting has completed. To accept the default location, press Enter. If you chose to convert the partition to NTFS, the installation will continue and the conversion will take place on the first boot of Windows NT.
11.) It will then say that it will examine your hard drive. Press Enter to continue. After it has examined your hard drive (it may take several minutes) it will begin copying files to the hard drive.
12.) After it has finished copying files, remove the diskette from the floppy drive and press Enter to restart the computer.
13.) At the Windows NT Workstation Setup window, click on Next to continue.
14.) You will then be given a list of setup options. Select Portable and then click on Next to continue.
15.) Enter you name and organization and then click on Next to continue.
16.) Enter in the CD Key (this is provided with your Windows NT 4.0 Workstation software) and then click on Next to continue.
17.) Enter in a computer name to identify your computer on a network. After entering it, click Next to continue.
18.) Enter a password for the Administrator account. After entering the password and confirming it, click Next to continue.
19.) It will then ask if you wish to create an Emergency Repair disk. Make sure that Yes is selected and then click on Next.
20.) It will then ask which component you would like to install. To accept the default, click Next.
21.) Click Next . It will then prompt you as to how this computer will participate on a network. Click on Do not connect this computer to a network at this time and then click on Next to continue. Click on Finish to complete setup.

Note: The networking components may be added later from the Network icon in Control Panel. If desired, and the drivers for your network adapter are available, and you have all the required information about your network, the networking components may be installed at this step. Please be aware that since PCMCIA support is not available during the installation of Windows NT, the network will not start until the system is restarted. A message stating that Windows NT was unable to start the network during the installation is normal.

22.) At the Date/Time Properties windows, select the appropriate time zone, check the date and time and then click on Close.
23.) At the Detected Display window, click on OK to continue. At the Display Properties window, click OK. The installation program will then begin copying files to the hard drive.
24.) It will prompt you to label a blank floppy disk as the Emergency Repair Disk and then to insert it into the floppy drive. Do so and then click on OK.
25.) After it is complete, remove the diskette from the floppy drive and click on Restart Computer.
26.) At the Begin Logon window, press the CTRL+ALT+DEL key to logon. Type in your Administrator password and click on OK and you are ready to use Windows NT 4.0 Workstation.

Installing Infrared Device Driver
Notice: If you install the Windows NT Service Pack after installing the IR driver, it is necessary to re-install the IR. This IR driver replaces the Microsoft driver serial.sys.

  1. Log on the Windows NT with the administrator's password.
  2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk.
  3. Click on Start; -> Run...
  4. Type C:\DRIVERS\WNT\INFRARED\INSTALL; then press Enter or click on OK to start the installation. The Windows NT Setup window appears.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  6. Shut down and restart the computer.

When the device driver is installed, the infrared port is configured as a COM1 (IRQ4/Base IO address 3F8h) serial device. This is the default setting.

If your IR port is not enabled as COM1, loading the infrared driver will fail. You know the driver failed to load if you see the Windows NT Event Viewer.

To enable the infrared port for COM1 on your computer, do the following:

  1. Run ThinkPad Feature program and enable the IR device as COM1.
  2. Shut down and restart the computer.

Changing the Infrared COM Port Number
When you need to use an IR port other than the default value for example, to change to COM2, do the following:

  1. Run ThinkPad Feature program and change the IR device COM port number to COM2.
  2. Shutdown and restart your computer.

After your computer is restarted, IR COM port will be changed.
