TP General - Installing Windows NT 4.0 from a non-supported CD-ROM drive

Applicable to: World-Wide

By default, the Windows NT installation process supports most SCSI and generic IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM drives as an installation source. It will NOT see any PCMCIA or Parallel Port attached drives, nor will it see most Sound Card attached drives. Therefore booting the Windows NT installation diskettes when attempting to install from one of these sources will fail. A successful installation of Windows NT can still be made from these drives using the following procedure.

Indications:
This procedure will be useful if you are installing from a PCMCIA or Parallel Port attached CD-ROM drive, or from a network share. It will also be indicated when installing from a Thinkpad CD-ROM drive when it is not possible to have both the floppy disk drive and the CD-ROM drive attached at the same time, as in the case of a Thinkpad 760 series system where either the FDD or the CD-ROM drive can be installed at a given time.

Installing Windows NT from an "non-supported" CD-ROM Drive
1) Configure the system with an operating system such as DOS or Windows 95 and have proper drivers installed to be able to read the CD-ROM drive which is to be used as the source.
2) Start the system and insert the Windows NT CD into the drive.
3) From a command prompt, change directory to the \i386 subdirectory on the CD (i.e. d:\i386)
4) Type the command, winnt /b. This will cause the Windows NT setup program (winnt.exe) to create a temporary directory on the hard drive of the system and copy all the needed installation files to that directory. It will also create a directory for the Windows NT boot files to be used when restarting the computer.
5) After the files are copied you will get the message, The MS-DOS portion of Setup is complete, please restart your system... Press enter to close this message and restart the system.

Note) You will not have the option to format the hard drive with this installation, as the source files are located there. You will also not be given the option to convert the partition to NTFS. If you wish to convert to NTFS you can do so after installing Windows NT by starting the system and using the command convert /fs:ntfs.

6) The installation can now proceed as described in the document appropriate for the specific system.

CONSIDERATIONS
There are a few items to consider when choosing this installation method:

This will install Windows NT in a "Dual Boot" configuration, where the Windows NT boot menu will ask you at each boot whether you wish to start Windows NT or your previous operating system. If you wish to remove the previous Operating system, you will have to do so manually.

If you wish to install to a blank drive, the closest you can come to this is to install just DOS and your CD-ROM drivers, then run the installation as above and manually remove the DOS files after the install if desired.

You will not have access to your CD-ROM drive until you install the Windows NT device driver support for it. In the case of a ThinkPad Internal drive, the support is inherent in Windows NT (IDE/ATAPI). If the device does not have Windows NT device drivers, it will not function under Windows NT.
NOTE: This means that if you wish to go back and install additional components, such as adding networking support, RAS, etc. you must first get the CD-ROM drive properly configured, as this will require the CD.

If you are installing from a network shared directory, it is advisable to install the appropriate networking support during the initial install, or you will not have access to the network (and thus the installation files) until this is done.
