Server 310 - 8639

All Server 310, Type 8639 computers have seven expansion slots, two of which are PCI expansion slots. The other five expansion slots are either MicroChannel or ISA, depending on model.

The PCI slots and their adjacent Micro Channel or ISA expansion slots are shared expansion slots. This means that an adapter can be installed in either the PCI expansion slot or the adjacent MicroChannel or ISA expansion slot, but not in both.

A SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI Adapter is installed in one of the PCI expansion slots. An Ethernet adapter is installed in one of the MicroChannel or ISA slots. This leaves one PCI slot and three Micro Channel or ISA slots available for future expansion.

ISA Riser Card Administrator Password

ISA Riser cards (PC 700 Series) have an administrator password jumper located to the left of the battery (if a battery is available or installed). The setting of this jumper determines if an Administrator Password can or cannot be set on the computer.

Note: This jumper will not remove the password. If the Administrator Password - PC 700 Series, Type 6876 or 6886 - is lost or forgotten, the password cannot be changed or removed. If this ccurs, the system board must be replaced.

PC 300/700 Riser Card - ECA007, ECA008, ECA009, ECA011

A signal condition with a PCI Token-Ring adapter in a PC330, PC730 or Server 310 machine can potentially cause a data error that could manifest itself in a system hang, or result in incorrect data with or without generating an error message. This affects PC330, PC730 and Server 310 models: 6577/87/89 (PC330), 6877/87 (PC730) and 8639 (Server 310). Original IBM announcement follows:

ECA Riser Card - M/Ts 6577/87/89, 6877/87, 8639

SIGNAL QUALITY CONDITION with PCI TOKEN RING ADAPTER

AS REQUIRED: CDT PC300/700 6577/87/89, 6877/87 with PCI T/R Adapter.

MANDATORY: ALL PC SERVER 310 166MHz = 8639 Mod 0E0,0EV,0EB. Dealers should order all needed riser cards (CDT and Server) via UPOS.

SYMPTOM: The condition can potentially cause a data error that could manifest itself in a system hang, or result in incorrect data with or without generating an error message.

PROBLEM: Server 310 166MHz and PC 300 Series 6577 and 6587 systems may experience the signal quality condition when used in conjunction with either of the following IBM PCI network adapters as listed below.

FIX: Replacement of the Riser Card to eliminate a potential signal quality condition which may occur during file transfer in these systems, for PC300/700 only if it contains one of the Token-Ring adapters listed below.

CIRCUMVENTION / DETAIL INFO

SERVER 310 166MHz

Replace the riser card in 8639 Models 0E0, 0EV and 0EB. System manufactured after May 1, 1997 (MFG DATE: 705 and later on the rear serial number label) are NOT affected.

PC300/700

Replace the riser card if BOTH the following conditions are met:

After installing the new riser, place a small white label approximately 1 centimeter in diameter on the machine type/model label on the rear of the system unit. Please obtain a supply of stickers locally. Remarketers should also place a sticker on the external shipping label attached to the box as well as on the rear of the updated system unit. Use the sticker attached to the rear of the system unit as a means for the customer or servicer to identify updated systems prior to an on-site service call.

No other combination of IBM or non-IBM PCI network adapters and the PC 300 Series systems or Servers have exhibited this problem.

EC_TEST.EXE tests the computer (DOS or OS2/W95/NT-DOS-Box) if

It does not verify the level of the riser card itself.

This file is available on Internet: http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/cdt/ec.html (Ed: link from the orignal announcement).

Placement of PCI adapters, especially PCI network adapters of any brand, should be done beginning with the PCI slot at the base of the riser card, closest to the system board. Additional PCI adapters should be installed in a bottom to top configuration.

Customers exposed to this potential condition should place the IBM PCI network adapter in the slot closest to the system board until the new riser card has been installed. This will minimize the possibility of this condition.
