I had the pleasure of talking
with retired US Senator Barry Goldwater (R-Arizona) on June 6, 1988. I
sat down and turned my HF rig on that afternoon, and heard two stations
in QSO on the frequency that I had left the rig on. I recognized Barry's
callsign immediatly, so I waited until they were finished and called him.
He was very cordial, and we had a pleasant conversation about his visits
to the Omaha, NE, area. It was quite a thrill to be able to talk with this
distinguished elder statesman.
___________ May 29, 1998 - Update: It was announced this morning that Senator Goldwater has passed away at the age of 89. This is a sad day for America, and he will be missed by a great many. Good bye, Barry, and thanks for everything! |

This is from my voice contact with Space Shuttle Atlantis on November 19, 1995, at 17:57z. The contact was with Bill McArthur, KC5ACR, Mission Specialist 3. My equipment was an Icom IC-251A transciever and a Mirage B108 amp (80 Watts) into a homebrew 2-meter turnstile antenna at about 25ft (7.6 meters) high.
I made contact with John Blaha, KC5TZQ, aboard the MIR space station on Oct. 4, 1996. Equipment was the same as the shuttle contact except for my antenna, which was a 17 element Cushcraft Boomer. John is quite the sports fan, so we had a quick chat about the poor luck the UNL Cornhuskers were having that week. John used the ham station aboard MIR frequently to keep up to date about how his favorite teams were doing.
