I am having trouble making TCP/IP attached printers work under
PSF for AIX Version 2 with PTF U438699 installed.

I have tried with both a 3935 (token-ring-attached) and 3900
(Ethernet-attached) but both give the same solid error. The 3900
did print one job but now it has the error, even after reboot. It
goes as follows....

0420-033 ERROR: Not enough memory is available to PSF/6000 to
process the input parameters. Close an active application to make
more memory available.

The RS/6000 is a 250 with 32MB RAM and 1GB hard disk. It fails
on both AIX 3.2.5 and 3.2.5.1. There is also plenty of free
paging space when the printing is fired up. The print command
is enq -P3900 /etc/motd

I am due to install the new relase at a customer site on Monday,
in a 3900 TR environment. He uses a C10 print server. I know
this should be a PMR, but can anyone give me an opinion as to
the cause of the error. I know the 250s are underspecified,
but I think they should be able to cope (Same failure on
a borrowed 250 with 64MB RAM). Do you think the C10 won't have
the problem or should I postpone the call?

Many thanks.

| Revised information as 10/95: this message has been rewritten to
| provide better guidance. Please obtain the latest PSF/AIX maintenance
| which includes the message update.

The 0420-033 message text is misleading; we already have on our to-do
list to correct the text in a future PTF.

This error indicates is that you are within 0.5MB of filling up the
file system where the dcl directory is located. By default, this
directory is in the path /var/psf/printername/dcl. If you have not
modified the default set-up, then this message is telling you that
you're within 0.5MB of filling up the /var filesystem.

Version 1 gave no warning or messages that /var was full or about
to be full; things just "died". In Version 2, we now warn you,
but we agree that we need to rewrite the message.

You have the following choices:

1) Clean unneeded files from /var (or the appropriate filesystem)
such as old traces or unnecessary printers
2) Increase the size of /var
3) Create a new file system and mount it on top of /var/psf.
Instructions are in Print Admin for V2 on page 411, but
one key step was omitted from that procedure: after step 2
but before step 3, you need to verify that /var/psf is
empty (all files and directories have been moved) and then
   rmdir /var/psf.

An example of the symbolic link command (Step 3) would be
helpful, too. For example, if your newly created and mounted
filesystem is called /psf, then the link command would be:

        ln -s /psf /var/psf

You should be okay for your new installation. Just keep in
mind that for new AIX installations, the size of /var defaults
to 4MB, and that is not enough for PSF/6000 or PSF for AIX to
work with, particularly with Version 2 and Input Manager,
as well as the PostScript and PCL transforms.

Some additional thoughts for your upcoming customer install:

1) When you upgrade from V1 to V2, you MUST first reject V1.
Use the "Reinstalling PSF/6000" procedures in the Print
Administration Guide. Printer definitions will remain
as will custom resources as long as they have custom names.

2) Since you're dealing with TCP/IP-attached printers, you
should implement the TCP KEEPALIVE support that is documented
in HONE FLASH 9508. Unlike SNA, TCP does not normally "poll"
communication partners. With KEEPALIVE, you can now direct TCP
to send KEEPALIVE transmissions thus enabling TCP and PSF to
detect when a printer that is directly attached via TCP/IP or an
i-data 7913 is abruptly powered off, both when PSF attempts to send
data and when it waits to receive data.
