..
Customer is currently using PSF/6000 for production printing of large
PCL files sent from multiple HP/UX servers to the PSF/6000 server.
to the PSF print server. Customer is interested in taking advantage of
the production print capabilities of the new PSF for AIX. In reading the
the documentation it looks like the customer must use the psfin command
to submit jobs if he wants to take advantage of the print management
enhancements. Is it possible to install the psfin module on an HP/UX
box? How would you recommend the customer proceed given the jobs
originate on an HP/UX server and the customer wants to have print
print management capabilities similar to JES?

As a second question I was under the impression that the customer would
need to migrate to AIX V4.1 in order to take advantage of moving jobs
between print queues however the announcement letter does not state this
as a requirement. Are all of the new functions announced with PSF/AIX
available under AIX V3.2.5? If not, what functions require AIX v4.1?
Does PPFA/AIX include code to create FORMDEFS using enhanced N_UP or
will formdefs need to be migrated from another platform?

A:
psfin works with the larger function we refer to as the Input Manager,
and is tightly integrated with other aspects of PSF for AIX Version 2.
Even if you could install that one program on the HP-UX system (which
you cannot), you would not have access to the production print
enhancements. All of PSF/6000 (PSF for AIX) would have to run on the
HP-UX box; that involves porting of code and is not in the BPC plan at
this time.

Let me give you a little more background. The Input Manager (along
with its production print enhancements) is a nice side benefit to the
tape-to-COM and tape-to-print capabilities. As currently implemented,
the Input Manager is only invoked for MVS Download jobs or for jobs
submitted locally through the new SMIT panels or through the psfin
command.

So what are the options for remote clients?

1) NFS-mount the HP file system containing the files to be printed to
the AIX system, and issue the print command from the RISC system either
through the SMIT panels or through psfin.

2) It may be possible (though we've not tried it) to create a queue on
the AIX system that calls a backend program to create a job script and
call psfin.

Keep in mind that AIX V3.2.5 and 4.1 are limited to a maximum file
size of 2GB.

There are a couple of other options that are likely less practical (such
as creating a tape that PSF for AIX could read, or uploading the file
from the HP to an MVS system, and then using MVS Download--when
available--to route the output into PSF for AIX and the Input Manager.).

I have passed along your question to the developer for consideration for
future releases of the product.

As for your other questions, there is some apparent overlap in function
between AIX V4.1 and some of the enhancements in PSF for AIX V2. Moving
jobs from queue to queue is one of those areas. If you submit jobs to
PSF for AIX V2 using psfin/Input Manager, then you can be at either
AIX 3.2.5 or AIX 4.1.x and move jobs from queue to queue through the
smit screens.

If you cannot use the Input Manager of PSF for AIX for some reason (such
as the remote case), then you should be able to use the functions
provided with AIX 4.1.x to move a job from queue to queue. All functions
described in the PSF/AIX V2 documentation for the Input Manager are
supported under either AIX 3.2.5 or 4.x.x; 4.x.x is not required for
any of those functions.

Yes, PPFA/AIX does include code to create formdefs with enhanced n_up.
You can certainly migrate formdefs from other platforms, but you can
also create them right at the RISC.

I hope that helps.
