Netscape Will Not Start after Upgrade from AIX 4.3.0 to 4.3.1

Environment

Problem

After an upgrade to AIX Version 4.3.1 is installed, Netscape does not start.

The error message resembles the following: 

  Could not load program /usr/local/netscape4/netscape_aix4
  Symbol __malloc_postfork_unlock in /usr/lib/libpthreads.a is undefined
  Symbol __malloc_prefork_lock in /usr/lib/libpthreads.a is undefined
  Could not load library libC.a[shr.o]
  Error was: Exec format error

Solution

  1. Download a copy of the nav_lib43.tar.Z file from ftp://service.software .ibm.com/aix/efixes/netscape. (ftp to the server if another machine's browser is unavailable.)

  2. Extract the libC.a: 
            cd /NETSCAPE_DIRECTORY
        compress -dc /DOWNLOAD_DIRECTORY/nav_lib43.tar.Z | tar -xvf-
    /NETSCAPE_DIRECTORY is the directory in which Netscape Communicator or Navigator is installed, and /DOWNLOAD_DIRECTORY is the directory to which the nav_lib43.tar.Z file was downloaded.
