Netscape Will Not Start after Latest AIX 4.2.1 Fixes Are Installed

Problem

After the latest AIX 4.2.1 fixes are installed, Netscape does not start. The error message resembles the following: 

  	Could not load program netscape_aix4
  	Symbol snprintf in /usr/lib/libX11.a is undefined
  	Could not load library libXt.a[shr4.o]
  	Error was: Exec format error

Solution

  1. Download a copy of the nav_lib42.tar.Z file from ftp://service.software .ibm.com/aix/efixes/netscape. (ftp to the server if another machine's browser is unavailable.)

  2. Save a copy of the old libc.a: 
            cd /NETSCAPE_DIRECTORY/lib42
        mv libc.a libc.a.old
    /NETSCAPE_DIRECTORY is the directory in which Netscape Navigator or Communicator is installed.

  3. Extract the new libc.a: 
            compress -dc /DOWNLOAD_DIRECTORY/nav_lib42.tar.Z | tar -xvf-
    /DOWNLOAD_DIRECTORY is the directory to which the nav_lib42.tar.Z file was downloaded.
