About This Document

This document describes setting up an Xstation 120/130. Provided below are four sample configuration scenarios which can used as a guide by System Administrators in setting up an Xstation.

This document applies to AIX versions 3.2 and 4.x.

NOTE: The examples use the Xstation 120 as a default, just substitute 130 where applicable.

XStation Setup Procedure

Before starting the setup procedure, check your inventory:

Then perform the following:

  1. Turn off the power switch.
  2. Connect the keyboard and mouse.
  3. Connect the network cables.
  4. Turn off the display power switch and connect the display cables.
  5. Connect the power cable to the system unit.
  6. Plug in the power cables into electrical outlets.
  7. Turn on the power switch to the display and then the Xstation.
  8. At the LAN statistics screen, determine the Xstation's Hardware Address and give this to your System Administrator.
Verify that the appropriate network is up on the boot host according to these conditions:

Now the Xstation can be configured on the network.


AIX Boot Host, No Gateway

  1. Add the Xstation's IP address and name to /etc/hosts. Such as:
       129.35.147.173    xstation1 
       129.35.147.93     boothost1 
    
  2. To define the Xstation use the command:
    smitty x_config

    Define an Xstation Network Type 
    *********************************************************** 
    Type or select values in entry fields. 
    Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes 
    [Entry Fields] 
    * Xstation Network TYPE Name     [x_st_mgr.network1] 
    * NETWORK Type                   [ethernet] 
    ---> or tokenring if not using ethernet 
    * SERVER PORT Number              [9000] 
    ---> x_st_mgrd port number is in /etc/services. 
    9000 is smit default. 
    * HOME Directory                  [/etc/x_st_mgr] 
    * BOOTFILE                        [bootfile3] 
    ---> the xstation 130 uses bootfile4 
    * DOMAIN Name Server              [] 
    * GATEWAY                         [] 
    Subnet MASK                     []

    Add an Xstation

    Add an Xstation 120

    Type or select value in entry fields. 
    Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

  3. Configure the Xstation.
    1. Power on the Xstation 120, when you get to the LAN statistics screen, hit the F12 key.
    2. Depending on which network type you are using, ethernet or token ring, page down to the appropriate page.
    3. Ensure that Primary Network is set to either token ring or ethernet.
    4. On the appropriate page, enter the following:
       Gateway Internet Address... <leave blank> 
       Terminal Internet Address.. 129.35.147.173 
       Host Internet Address...... 129.35.147.93 
       Disable Bootp.............. NO 
       TFTP File Name........... /usr/lpp/x_st_mgr/bin/bootfile3 
    ---> bootfile4 for Xstation 130 
       Tag Field................ T170=2328:
    
    For XDMCP Direct Query, add:

    T170=2328:T178=02:T179=<HEX representation of the Host IPADDRESS>

  4. Hit the F12 key to save changes and reboot the Xstation.

AIX Boot Host, Gateway Passes bootp Requests

  1. Add the Xstation's IP address and name to /etc/hosts. Such as:
       129.35.147.173    xstation1 
       129.35.147.93     boothost1 
       129.35.147.100    gateway1 
    
  2. To configure with SMIT type:
    smit x_config

    Define an Xstation Network Type

    Type or select values in entry fields. 
    Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes
