Configuration for AIX

For TTY-attached 3494s, see IBM SCSI Tape Drive, Medium Changer, and Library Device Driver's Installation and User's Guide, order number GC35-0154.

For Channel-attached 3494s, see AIX Parallel and ESCON Channel Tape Attachment/6000 Installation and User's Guide, order number GA32-0311.

Complete the following steps:

  1. Edit /etc/ibmatl.conf.

Using vi, move the cursor down to the last line, and add a line with three or four fields separated by tabs:

Quit out of insert mode and save the file by holding the Shift key while hitting the z key twice.

  2. Use SMIT to add a tape drive:
    smitty devices
      Tape Drive
        Add a Tape Drive
atl library LAN/TTY Library Manager Control Point

  3. Press the Enter key to define the library.

  4. press the F10 key to exit SMIT.

  5. Run the following command to bring the /dev/lmcp0 device available and start the lmcpd daemon:
    cfgmgr

Configure the 3494 library for TCP/IP

NOTE: This task is usually performed by the Customer Engineer (CE) or Service Engineer (SE) during installation and is officially supported through the hardware IBM representative's field office or through the field office to the Product Field Engineer (PFE).

  1. Go to the OS/2 console at the rear of the library.
  2. Go to the Commands pulldown.
  3. Go to LAN Options.
  4. Go to Add a LAN Host.

    1. Select TCP/IP
    2. Alias = Field 3 from ibmatl.conf
    3. IP Address = IP of the RS/6000
    4. Hostname = the host name of the RS/6000

NOTE: Hostname is the host name as reported by reverse name resolution from the 3494. If this does not match, then you will ALWAYS receive the message, Library is Offline to Host, though this is not the only cause of such a message.

Verify your work

Run the following command to be sure it lists your inventory in the library:
mtlib -l /dev/lmcp0 -qI

Common problems

The error message, Library is Offline to Host, can result from one or more of the following problems.

Configuration problems

TTY problems

Network problems

NOTE: Sometimes the route is picked up by RDP. In this case, using the ping command will open up the connection for some amount of time, then it will fail again. If this happens, have the network administrator of the site check out the network layout, including any bridges or routers in between the RS/6000 host and the 3494 host.
