This document discusses the causes and recovery procedures for an LED C31.
The document applies to AIX Version V4.
An LED C31 during IPL on a RS/6000 in AIX V4 may be caused by one of the following:
If the problem is due to an incorrect console configuration, then the following procedures should resolve the issue:
If the problem is due to a missing device driver, then ensure the device exists and is installed on the boot media being used on the machine. This should only apply to graphics adapters on the machine. Not all graphics adapters may be supported on certain levels of AIX or be included in base level releases of install media.
If the problem is due to hardware problem with the machine or console device, boot from CD-ROM diagnostics that will support all of the associate hardware installed in the machine. If a C31 is still occuring with no output being sent to any display, and the preceding actions have been verified first, then a hardware problem with one of the associated hardware systems is suspected. If you don't have a supported diagnostics CD-ROM or feel uncomfortable performing diagnostics tests, please contact your hardware service representative to perform this for you.
Assuming all fixes for known problems are also installed on the boot media, the problem should be resolved. If not, please contact one of the following for further assistance:
