About This Document

This document discusses the software and procedures needed to set up both man pages and InfoExplorer in AIX Version 3.2, 4.1, and 4.2 systems using the Technical Library CD-ROM (HIBL Format - Hypertext Information Base Libraries - for use with InfoExplorer).

AIX Technical Library is a reference library of comprehensive AIX service and support information. This library utilizes InfoExplorer as its search mechanism.

Prerequisites

Setting Up Man Pages and InfoExplorer

You must have a CD-ROM file system with a mount point of /usr/lpp/info/data/techlib. If not, you may have to unmount an existing CD-ROM, remove the file system, and recreate one at the techlib mount point. Once the file system exists, mount the CD-ROM and test.

  1. If it is necessary to free up the CD-ROM drive for the techlib CD-ROM, determine which device to free up, and enter:

    umount /dev/<device_name>

Remove any prior versions of AIX Technical Library (or InfoExplorer) from the CD-ROM drive and insert the new version of AIX Technical Library.

  2. Determine the mount point of your CD-ROM file system.

If this is NOT your first Techlib CD, the mount point of your CD-ROM file system should already be /usr/lpp/info/data/techlib. Go to Step 5.

If you have a CD-ROM file system defined, and the mount point is not /usr/lpp/info/data/techlib (for example, it might be /usr/lpp/info/En_US), remove this CD-ROM file system and create one with a mount point of /usr/lpp/info/data/techlib. Go to Step 3.

If you have NO CD-ROM file system defined on your machine, create one with a mount point of /usr/lpp/info/data/techlib. Go to Step 4.

  3. Remove the old file system if it exists.
    1. Enter smit -C rmcdrfs
    2. Press the F4 key to select the proper CD-ROM file system.
    3. Press the enter key to delete the CD-ROM files system.
    4. Press the F10 key to exit SMIT.
  4. Create the new CD-ROM file system.
    1. Enter cd /usr/lpp/info/data
    2. Enter mkdir techlib
    3. Enter smit -C cdrfs
    4. Press the F4 key to select the proper device (for example, cd0).
    5. Fill in the MOUNT POINT field with /usr/lpp/info/data/techlib.
    6. Change "Mount AUTOMATICALLY at system restart" from no to yes.
    7. Press the enter key to create the CD-ROM file system.
    8. Press the F10 key to exit SMIT.
  5. Mount the new CD.
    1. Ensure that the AIX Technical Library CD is in the CD drive.
    2. Enter mount /dev/cd0 to mount the AIX Technical Library CD.
  6. Proceed to the appropriate directions below to access the Hypertext Information Base Library and AIX Technical Library, based on your level of the AIX Operating System.
    1. Ensure that the CD-ROM file system has been created as described above.
    2. Enter cd /usr/lpp/info/data
    3. Enter cp ispaths ispaths.back
    4. If you are running AIX 3.2, enter cd /usr/lpp/info/data/techlib/aix325
    5. If you are running AIX 4.1, enter cd /usr/lpp/info/data/techlib/aix41
    6. Enter cp ispaths /usr/lpp/info/data/ispaths

Verification Procedure for AIX Technical Library

  1. Verify that the AIX Systems Center Q&A database and the AIX Version 3 APAR databases are both available. Execute the following:

       info -l techlib

If the Release Notes appear, the installation was successful.

  2. Verify that the Hypertext Information Base Library databases are accessible. To invoke InfoExplorer, enter:

       info

If InfoExplorer comes up, it is installed correctly.
