About This Document

These instructions serve as a guide to quickly installing DOS on the PCSIM product. If you don't know how to use DOS, consult the reference manual. This document provides no DOS configuration information (how to write an autoexec.bat and so on) beyond that which is needed to get the C drive ready for PCSIM. This document applies to AIX Version 3.2.

To configure PCSIM, you need a DOS startup disk.

Procedure

The steps to configure DOS for PCSIM are:

  1. Create the C drive.
  2. Once you have decided where you are going to locate the C drive, you will need create an empty file. You can do this by typing the following (assuming that you want to place the C drive in the /home directory):

               touch /home/dos.33

NOTE: To make the C drive available to all users on the system, you could create a /pcsim file system and install the C drive in that file system. The advantages of this installation are numerous. If you decide to do this, logically substitute that file system name for /home in the rest of this document. For each user you should create a D drive (as a directory, not a file). The C drive should be marked as read only.

  3. Start the configuration process. At this point you will need to put your startup DOS disk in the drive. Once the disk is in the drive, type the following at the AIX command line:
  4. pcsim -Adiskette 3 -Cdrive /home/dos.33 dmode m -save $HOME/simprof

The floppy drive light comes on and, after some delay, the DOS prompt A> appears.

NOTE:If you are using DOS Version 4.0 you will be placed in the SELECT program. Hit ESC and F3 to exit the SELECT program and get to the A> prompt.

  5. Define the C drive to DOS. Once you are at the A> prompt, type the DOS command
  6. fdisk

This command asks you to create a primary DOS partition and asks you what size you want your DOS drive to be.

Follow the prompts and make the partition.

Make the partition active and then press Enter to reboot the partition.

  7. Format the C drive and place the system on it. Once the DOS portion has rebooted, you should again have an A> prompt. At the prompt type the following DOS command:
  8. format c:/s

This command formats the C drive and puts the system on the C drive so that the hard disk is bootable.

REMOVE THE DISK FROM THE FLOPPY DRIVE.

  9. End PCSIM and test to make sure the C drive is bootable.
  10. Once the the format is complete, exit PCSIM by hitting the ESC key and typing PCSIM.

Change the directory to /home (execute cd $home) and type pcsim.

The PCSIM product should come up and you should have a C> prompt.

  11. Consult InfoExplorer or your DOS manual for information on how to use DOS or other PCSIM flags and setup options.
