7596-001 AIX Server Module Microcode

New Level Description

This microcode update is version 1.11 for the AIX Server Module of the 7596-001 Cross Platform Server.
Year 2000 Support
Systems with installed microcode at a version level prior to 1.07 must be updated to be Year 2000 ready*.

You will want to update your microcode to version 1.11 if your currently installed level of microcode is prior to 1.07. If your installed microcode level is version 1.07 or later, update is not required to make your system Year 2000 ready*. However, version 1.11 provides functional enhancements that most customers will desire. See the next section.

* Please consult the IBM Year 2000 web page at http://www.ibm.com/IBM/year2000 for IBM's definition of "Year 2000 ready" and the latest information of the status of IBM products and the Year 2000.

Enhanced Function
The enhancement in this release is:
Improved Reboot -- Some customers have experienced intermittent systems hangs during a soft reboot (the system is rebooted without turning off the power). Running the AIX command "shutdown -Fr" is one example of a soft reboot.

You will want to update your microcode if you have experienced the problem above, or would like to prevent this problem from occurring on your system.

If the version of your current microcode is greater than or equal to 1.11, there is no need to upgrade your microcode.

How To Determine Your Microcode Version

To check your microcode version:

  1. Insert your System Management Services (SMS) diskette into the diskette drive.
  2. Turn on or shutdown and restart the system.
  3. When the first screen is displayed, press the F4 key to use the System Management Services. Note: you must press the F4 key after the keyboard icon has appeared at the bottom of the screen, but before the last icon appears at the bottom right of the screen.
  4. Read the version number from the header that appears at the top of the main SMS menu. It should look similar to the following:
       Version 1.xx, built on mm/dd/yy
            at hh:mm:ss
(Note: 1.xx is your microcode version
where xx is a 2-digit number.)

Note: if your microcode version is not in the form 1.xx, you should update it to the version available here.
