Chapter 1. SP system overview

This chapter provides an introduction to the IBM Parallel System Support Programs for AIX (PSSP). PSSP is the system administration software for the IBM RS/6000 Scalable POWERparallel (SP) system. Other IBM licensed programs that work cooperatively with PSSP are also introduced.

• A brief overview of the SP system hardware components.
• Planning and preparing to install or to migrate to the latest PSSP and PSSP-related software.

Remember to use the edition of the book that relates to the release of PSSP that you have or in which you are interested.

The SP system software includes:

• |AIX 5L or AIX, the base operating system.
• PSSP, the higher-level set of support programs and interfaces that enables you to take advantage of the parallel processing features of the SP system.
• Other IBM licensed programs.
• Independent software vendor programs.
