Technical Description
Physical Specifications Operating Environment Limitations
Hardware Requirements Software Requirements

The IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850 systems are small light-weight battery or AC operated portable notebook computers. These computers are a general solution for mobile, field or desk oriented professionals who need 32-bit operating systems.

Microprocessor:

The 850 systems are based on the new generation PowerPC technology in the form of the PowerPC 603e microprocessor running at 100MHz. The 603e provides integrated 32KB level 1 cache, floating point unit, and Power Management.

System Memory:

The 850 implements a 64-bit memory bus architecture for enhanced performance, which is also enhanced by the standard 256KB of Level 2 Cache. Base system memory is provided by a 16MB SODIMM module on the system planar. Two 16MB SODIMMs are used to provide the base 32MB system.

Memory expansion is accomplished with two ICDRAM sockets placed under the hard disk drive and the CD-ROM drive. Two ICDRAM cards of the same size must be installed to expand memory. Total system memory is 96MB using 16MB or 32MB ICDRAM cards in pairs.

Storage Devices:

The 850 systems are available with two 2.5 inch SCSI-2 hard disk capacities, 810MB and 1.2GB. These hard disks are user removable.

All systems have a built in double speed 5.25 inch SCSI-2 CD-ROM that is user removable.

They also have an external 3.5 inch 1.44MB diskette drive. This FDD can be removed from its covers and installed in the system in place of the CD-ROM. A bezel is provided for this purpose.

Graphics and Displays:

The G10 Graphics Adapter provides customary graphics function expected in a premium mobile system. The G10 Graphics with Motion Video Adapter adds full motion video I/O to graphics capabilities. The G10 Graphics Adapter is standard on the IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850.

The G10 with Motion Video Adapter supports the 640x480 display and is capable of supporting a external monitor of up to 1024x768. The TFT panels also support the 1024x768 mode by a pan capability implemented in operating system device drivers that allows the smaller window to move around in the larger display buffer.

Limitations

  • G10 Graphics with Motion Video Adapter supports NTSC video input and output, and PAL video input only.

  • G10 Graphics with Motion Video is supported in the operating system environment only. Support may vary by operating system.

  • Software developers envisioning the use of DCBZ or MTMSR PowerPC instructions should consult the programming guidelines area of the IBM Power Series Systems Products and Solutions home page on the World Wide Web. URL: http://www.austin.ibm.com/powrinfo.html

  • Audio functions are supported only in the operating system environment. Audio support may vary by operating system. Audio support for AIX requires IBM Ultimedia Services Version 2.1, or later.

  • The power management function is implemented in the operating system environment, and will affect the expected battery life.

  • The system is designed so customers can install or remove a PCMCIA card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card and operating system selected support this function. Refer to the PCMCIA card instructions.

  • The keyboard is an integral part of the IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850. It cannot be interchanged as other RS/6000 keyboards may and key caps cannot be exchanged.

  • When the system is working under some operating systems, removal and installation of a PCMCIA card may not be supported during the power-on state.

  • When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, cable interference may allow only one card to be used.

  • PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended.

  • Maximum data transfer rate of the built-in, double-speed CD-ROM drive is approximately 300KBps when used with the IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850.

  • The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector cable is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port.

  • When running AIX with a tablet instead of the TrackPoint III in the AIXwindow environment, execute (rmdev -1 mouse0) at the command line before starting the AIXwindow environment.

  • Devices supported depends on the operating system used and on the availability of its device driver. It is recommended that this information be verified with the device driver.

  • Device drivers for x86 systems supplied with PCMCIA cards will not execute on these systems. Customer must insure that PowerPC device drivers are available for the card.

  • The resolution of NTSC OUT is less than VGA resolution. The screen quality may not be equal to what is expected.

Suspend Mode/Hibernation Mode Operational Considerations:

The system can enter suspend mode when using a PCMCIA card with one of the following operating systems:

  • IBM AIX Version 4.1.4 for Clients
  • Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition)

Note: Removing or installing PCMCIA cards during suspend/hibernation mode is not recommended. Also the suspend/hibernation mode capabilities are operating system dependent.

Hardware Requirements

Models are complete systems and can include an operating system.

Software Requirements

The following operating systems support the IBM ThinkPad Power Series 850:

  • IBM AIX Version 4.1.4 for Clients
  • Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (PowerPC Edition)
  • Solaris Desktop 2.5.1 (PowerPC Edition)

No Charge Specify Codes

(#0001) After Market Order Specify

(For IBM US, No Longer Available as of January 8, 1997)

Feature 0001 may be used for MES ordering. This feature prevents configuration checking and allows "bulk quantity" ordering. It does not have to be repeated for subsequent MES orders for the same machine.

(#2010) Internal 810MB Hard Disk Drive

Provides 810MB of SCSI-2 disk storage.

(#5006) Software Preinstall

Indicates that customer desires software ordered with the system to be pre-loaded (if the software product supports pre-load).

Special Feature Codes -- Chargeable

Feature Descriptions

The following is a list of all feature codes in numeric order.

Attributes, as defined in the following feature descriptions, state the interaction of requirements among features.

Minimums and maximums are the absolute limits for a single feature without regard to interaction with other features. The maximum valid quantity for MES orders may be different than for initial orders. The maximums listed below refer to the largest quantity of these two possibilities.

The order type defines if a feature is orderable only on initial orders, only on MES orders, on both initial and MES orders, or if a feature is supported on a model due to a model conversion. Supported features cannot be ordered on the converted model, only left on or removed from the converted model.

(#0001) - After-market Order Indicator

Feature 0001 may be used for MES feature orders. This feature prevents configuration checking and allows "bulk quantity" ordering. It does not have to be repeated for subsequent MES orders for the same machine.
