TP 560 - Installing Windows NT 4.0 and its device drivers

Applicable to: World-Wide

This document provides instructions for installing Windows NT 4.0 Workstation on your IBM ThinkPad 560/E/X. To obtain all the necessary drivers, click here.

Installing Windows NT 4.0 Workstation
1.) For instructions on how to install Windows NT from an external CD-ROM drive, click here.
2.) After starting the procedure outlined in the link above it will begin to copy files to the hard drive. This will take some time. After it has finished copying files to the hard drive, it will prompt you to remove any diskette from the floppy drive and then press Enter to restart the computer.
3.) When it boots up you will be given two options. One is to start your previous operating system. The other is to continue with the Windows NT installation/upgrade. Select to continue with the installation.
4.) At the Welcome to Setup screen, press Enter to continue
4.) It will then say that it has detected the following device: IDE CD-ROM <ATAPI 1.2>/PCI IDE Controller. Press Enter to continue.
6.) Read through the licensing agreement (use the PAGE DOWN key to read the entire agreement). When finished you are prompted to hit the F8 key to agree or ESC if you do not agree. If you agree, press the F8 key to continue.
7.) It will then give you a list of hardware and software components:

Computer: Standard PC
Display: Auto Detect
Keyboard: XT, AT, or Enhanced Keyboard <83-104 keys>
Keyboard Layout: US
Pointing Device: Microsoft Mouse Port Mouse <includes BallPoint>

Highlight Display: AutoDetect, then press Enter. Select Standard VGA (640X480, 16 colors), then select Enter.

Then make sure No Changes: The above list matches my computer is highlighted and press Enter to continue.

8.) It will then show the existing partitions on your hard drive. Make sure the drive you want to install Windows NT on is highlighted (if you only have one partition then there will only be one drive to select) and press Enter.
9.) On the next screen, select Leave the current file system intact (no changes) and press Enter to continue.
10.) You will then be asked where you want to install Windows NT. To accept the default press Enter.
11.) It will then say that it will examine your hard drive. Press Enter to continue. After it has examined your hard drive (it may take several minutes) it will begin copying files to the hard drive.
12.) After it has finished copying files, remove any diskette from the floppy drive and press Enter to restart the computer.
13.) At the Windows NT Workstation Setup window, click on Next to continue.
14.) You will then be given a list of setup options. Select Portable and then click on Next to continue.
15.) Enter you name and organization and then click on Next to continue.
16.) Enter in the CD Key (this is provided with your Windows NT 4.0 Workstation software) and then click on Next to continue.
17.) Enter in a computer name to identify your computer on a network. After entering it, click Next to continue.
18.) Enter a password for the Administrator account. After entering the password and confirming it, click Next to continue.
19.) It will then ask if you wish to create an Emergency Repair disk. Make sure that Yes is selected and then click on Next.
20.) It will then ask which component you would like to install. To accept the default, click Next.
21.) Click Next . It will then prompt you as to how this computer will participate on a network. Click on Do not connect this computer to a network at this time and then click on Next to continue. Click on Finish to complete setup.
Note: The networking components may be added later from the Network icon in Control Panel. If desired, and the drivers for your network adapter are available, and you have all the required information about your network, the networking components may be installed at this step. Please be aware that since PCMCIA support is not available during the installation of Windows NT, the network will not start until the system is restarted. A message stating that Windows NT was unable to start the network during the installation is normal.
22.) At the Date/Time Properties windows, select the appropriate time zone, check the date and time and then click on Close.
23.) At the Detected Display window, click on OK to continue. At the Display Properties window, click OK. The installation program will then begin copying files to the hard drive.
24.) It will prompt you to label a blank floppy disk as the Emergency Repair Disk and then to insert it into the floppy drive. Do so and then click on OK.
25.) After it is complete, remove any diskette from the floppy drive and click on Restart Computer.
26.) At the Begin Logon window, press the CTRL+ALT+DEL key to logon. Type in your Administrator password and click on OK and you are ready to use Windows NT 4.0 Workstation.

Note: If you have more than one partition on your hard drive, you should check your drive letter assignments before installing any device drivers. If you have more than one non primary partition, NT may assign drive letters in an unexpected fashion. For best results, the system files should be installed to drive letter C: . To change drive letter assignment from NT's assignment, run the disk administrator. It may require more than one boot if drive C: is assigned to a non system partition.
