TP 385XD - Other Considerations

Applicable to: World-Wide

Other Considerations
These considerations are for the 385XD that came preloaded with Windows 98.

o DMI BIOS does not report the dynamic configuration change caused by Warm docking/Undocking to Network Management software.

o While the HDD can be upgraded by the customer, it is not designed to be removed and reinserted on a regular basis. Repeated and frequent removal, for purposes other than to upgrade for greater capacity, may cause damage to the system.

o External FDD through Port Replicator is not supported.

o If a secondary drive letter is assigned to a single CD-ROM drive under DOS or Windows 3.11 system, edit your CONFIG.SYS and move such a statement as "DEVICE=C:\CDROM\IBMTPCD.sys /R" to the top of the CONFIG.SYS file.

o DMI BIOS does not support Warm Docking/Undocking.

o If a CardBus Card is inserted in a Port Replicator slot, another PCMCIA Card is not recognized.

o SO DIMM part number 50H7660 with DRAM part number 43H7496 is not supported.

o To use IBM CD400 CD-ROM drive on Windows NT 4.0, CD-400 device driver must be Version 2.0, or later.

o TranXit for Windows 95 cannot communicate with TranXit for OS/2.

o The system audible alarm will not sound under some setup modes. It can be enabled by using the ThinkPad Features program.

o Enabling IR on the host system during a co-sessions host session is not supported.

o When using the redirection feature of the Connectivity Pack for the HP 100LX or HP 200LX to exchange data over an IR link at 115 Kbps, the ThinkPad 380XD should be configured as the requestor.

o IRQ for Sound Blaster Pro is 5 or 7 only.

o The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port.

o The "Video Memory" information in the NetFinity System information Service shows 1984 KB on Windows 95 and 2048 KB on Windows NT. Video memory of 64 KB is reserved for the system and NetFinity on Windows 95 shows the size that is available for applications to use.

o The "total amount of virtual memory free" information in the NetFinity System Information Service always returns 62 MB on Windows 95 when the correct value is greater than a value of 62 MB.

o The NetFinity 5.00.x does not support IBM EtherJet PC card.

o LANDesk(R) Client Manager (LDCM) cannot be installed if NetFinity has already been installed. NetFinity and LDCM may conflict with each other.

o Processor speed information returns its approximation.

o After installing LDCM, its related programs are always running in the background. If you experience the other application program installation failure, uninstall LDCM once.

o After installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, your system may not boot without any network adapter cards. The possible cause is RPCSS Page Fault in OLE32 when no network support installed. To solve this problem, install DCOM95 Version 1.1 (build level 1718). This is available at Web site: http://www.microsoft.com BAD DOCLINK -

o Unable to manage clients via the remote LDCM interface after the machine has suspended (or hibernated) and resume. Boot the client to recover from this situation.

o Unable to shutdown clients via the remote LDCM interface after the machine is in Standby mode.

o LDCM may have an application exception (divided by 0) on LDISCN32.EXE at system initialization after plugging in an ATA PC card.

o These systems support PCMCIA PC cards that draw a maximum of 5 watts for PC Card slots of the system and 7 watts for PC Card slots of the ThinkPad 380/385 Port Replicator.

o The IBM 3270 PCMCIA adapter cannot be used in a DOS environment.

o The Windows 95 Control Panel should be used to stop PC Cards before entering suspend. If a PC Card is stopped with CardWizard before entering suspend, CardWizard may not recognize the PC Card status correctly, which may cause a system malfunction if the PC Card is removed from the slot.

o CardBus cards that do not support CCLKRUN# may not work correctly.

o When USB is disabled/enabled by Windows 95 Device Manager, the system needs to be restarted. If the system is not restarted, suspension/hibernation may cause the system to hang or halt.

o When using communication cards, it is recommended that the Power Management Mode be set to "High Performance" or "Max" (in Customized). Otherwise, some communication cards may fail.

Other tips and hints
o Many factors, including continuous use of the HDD or CD-ROM drive and reading long video files, will impact battery life.

o Video performance will be reduced when operating under the 64 K or 16 M color mode.

o The system allows the customer to install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card.

Suspend/Resume
o With AC power, the system can not enter suspend mode if an IBM communication PC card is installed. A modem PC card will not prevent suspend mode. System can not enter hibernation mode under AC power if either an IBM communication PC card or a Modem PC card is installed.

o IBM Portable 20X-10X CD-ROM drive does not support power management function.

o Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode. They enter standby mode instead.

o When using Windows 3.11, ensure that Advanced Power Management (APM) is installed.

o The system should be in either hibernation or "off" when exchanging the battery.

o During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 100 mW at 12 V. During suspend mode, PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60 mA at 12 V.

o RI resume is only supported in CardSoft mode with CardWorks under Windows 95.

o The system will not go to suspend if any PCMCIA communication cards, including the following, are used:
- IBM 3270 Emulation Credit Card Adapter
- IBM 5250 Emulation Credit Card Adapter
- IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter
- IBM Credit Card Adapter for Ethernet

o If the system is suspended/resumed during the following operations, unpredictable results may occur:
- Audio record or playback
- Video record or playback
- Playback of MPEG file, AVI file, video CD, CD-i
- Active communications (PCMCIA modem) in OS/2 applications
- DOS games

o Under Windows NT 4.0, ATA cards do not go into suspend/hibernate if ATA card is mounted in AC mode.

o A suspend/resume operation during a modem application in the Windows DOS box may cause the application to hang. The modem application should be closed before entering a suspend.

o A suspend/resume operation during audio recording may result in unexpected results. Audio recordings should be stopped before entering suspend.

o Suspend/Resume is not supported during MPEG play with FujiFilm RI7001 PC Card.

o Suspend/Resume is not supported during recording function of IBM VoiceType for Windows 95.

PCMCIA
o SDLC/SDLC modem PCMCIA card is not supported on Windows NT. If this happens in Windows NT, remove SystemSoft driver. (Japan only)

o PC card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also, point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended.

o When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only one card to be used.

o When using an IBM PCMCIA token-ring card under Windows NT 4.0, use the token-ring device driver IBM provides, not the Microsoft native PCMCIA Token-Ring driver.

o Adaptec APA-1480 SCSI PC Card is not supported.
