Purpose
These instructions are intended to help you remove your combination sound and modem card. It must be replaced with a new modem card and a new sound card to retain the audio and modem functions of the combination sound and modem card.

Important Note For Owners of 2159-Sxx Series Aptivas
The instructions will ask that you have a host card to soundcard audio cable for 2159-Sxx series machines in order to install a different soundcard into your computer. The IBM part number for this cable is 10H2856 and can be purchased by calling 1-800-388-7080. The instructions will also ask that you have an uninstall diskette which will remove the drivers on your computer for the combination sound and modem card. Click here to download the uninstall diskette file. If you have previously downloaded the Mwave 20E drivers, you can use the first diskette of the 20E drivers as an uninstall diskette.

Using the Emergency Recovery Utility
After you have installed the new sound and modem card drivers, you should create an Emergency Recovery Diskette by using the Emergency Recovery Utility to save critical configuration and system files. Please refer to the "Emergency Recovery Utility" section of the online manual. These files are necessary if you ever recover your system using the Recovery CD. In this event, you will need to boot your system with the Emergency Recovery disk in the floppy drive. This prevents you from having to install and uninstall the combination sound and modem card.

An Important Note About System Recovery
In some cases in the future, you may need to use the Recovery CD-ROM that comes with your computer. If you need to reload the hard disk drive with the original software configuration and you have not created the Emergency Recovery Disk, you will need to re-install the combination sound and modem card before you begin the process. Re-installing the combination sound and modem card before the recovery process will reduce the number of errors your computer will have while restoring the software.
