NOTE: This driver will now automatically extract to your hard drive. It will only extract under Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT. The extraction process will NOT work with any other operating system.
This document describes how to install the IBM ThinkPad Features Program under Windows NT and provides some technical information on using the program. Before installing this program, read the following instructions.
1.0 Installatin Guide
To install this program, follow the instructions below.
1-1 Start Windows NT (V3.51 or higher) on your ThinkPad.
1-2 Extract the Utility Diskette into your hard drive (C:) and go to Windows NT File Manager (version 3.51) or Windows NT Explorer (version 4). Select drive c:\drivers\wnt\utility.
1-3 Double click "INSTDRV.EXE" on drive c: to run the program. This will install the ThinkPad Features NT device driver on your system. When this driver is installed, the following message appears:
"Installation complete for ThinkPad Feature NT driver. Shutdown and restart Windows NT. Run INSTALLN to install ThinkPad Feature program after Windows NT is started."
Note: If you have already installed an old version of ThinkPad Features and are running the Fuel Gauge program, close this program before installing the device driver. If not, a "DLL load error" message will appear.
1-4 Shut down and restart Windows NT. Go to Windows NT File Manager or Explorer and select drive c. Double click "INSTALLN.EXE" to install the ThinkPad Features program. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
1-5 Logoff Windows NT and log on again to start using the ThinkPad Features program. The Fuel Gauge program icon will automatically be created and become active.
2.0 Using ThinkPad Features
This section describes how to use the ThinkPad Features, Fuel Gauge Program and Personalization Editor. Refer to ThinkPad Features On-line Help for general information. This section contains some unique information associated with the Windows NT environment which is not included in the On-line Help.
2-1 Fuel Gauge Program
On the fuel gauge screen, the function of the suspend icon is defined in the following manner depending on which ThinkPad you are using:
ThinkPad 755CD, 755CDV, 755CE, 755CSE, 755CV, 755CX
On some ThinkPads, clicking the "suspend" icon will make the system go into stand-by instead of going into suspend. Attempting to put the system in suspend mode will cause errors under NT such as delay of the clock during suspend, and erroneous power-off of certain devices after resuming. To avoid this situation, clicking the suspend icon does not actually make the system go into suspend, but rather puts it into standby, in which the LCD turns off, the hard drive stops and the CPU is set to low speed if there is no busy state detected by the system BIOS.
There is a "hibernation" icon on the same menu but using the hibernation function is not recommended since it may cause the same errors as suspending.
- ThinkPad 345CS, 360C, 360CS, 370C, 755C
On these ThinkPads, clicking the "suspend" icon does put the machine into suspend rather than standby. It is not recommended to use this button to suspend.
On some ThinkPads, the "hibernation" icon appears on the same menu but it is not recommended to use this feature since it may cause the same problems as suspending.
2-2 Suspend/Resume options at Power Mode Setting
If you set "Will not suspend even if LCD is closed", it will have the following effects in the Windows NT environment:
This setting not only inhibits suspending when the LCD is closed, but also inhibits ANY suspend operation, including using Fn+F4 suspend key, suspend selection at battery gauge icon menu, automatic suspend with suspend timer and low battery suspend.
To make this mode active, choose this option under Thinkpad Features and save it. Then shutdown and restart NT. When you boot NT, this setting will take effect.
WARNING:
YOU MUST MANUALLY SHUTDOWN THE SYSTEM WHEN LOW BATTERY CONDITION OCCURS. SYSTEM DOES NOT GO TO SUSPEND AUTOMATICALLY AT LOW POWER BATTERY.
2-3 Inhibiting Suspend Operations
You can inhibit the automatic timer suspend mode using the "Power" mode menu under ThinkPad Features. Unless you specify the "Will not suspend even if LCD is closed" option under the suspend/resume option, you must have at least the following power mode settings in order to avoid going to suspend:
- Set the "Power Mode" to "Customized"
- Set the "Suspend time" to "0" (disable timer suspend)
Save the above options and set the power mode as "Customized" mode to make the change take effect.
Disabling automatic suspend will avoid the suspend errors that occur under Windows NT.
2-4 Others
Although ThinkPad Features provides settings for many devices, not all of these devices are supported under NT, or are supported without additional drivers. For example, enabling Infrared Port under this program only enables the port in BIOS. You must still install the infrared device drivers if they are available for your machine for the infrared port to work.
