Abstract: NETFINITY 5600: POSSIBLE POWER-ON PROBLEM
SYMPTOM:
When attempting to power on the system the video does not display and the system halts.
PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
a Netfinity 5600 server, Type 8664, Models: 11Y, 1RY, 21Y, 2RY, 31Y or 3RY.
FIX:
Intel plans to fix the problem with their 133MHz FSB (Front Side Bus) Pentium III processors
in future production, however IBM is providing a workaround to the problem through the use of
the onboard system management processor.
The IBM Netfinity 5600 Advanced System Management Processor Firmware Update Diskette Version
2.10 is available on the web to address this problem (P/N 09N8253A).
This code can be downloaded from the IBM Netfinity support web site at:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/searchfiles.html
search on "Netfinity 5600 Advanced System Management
Processor Firmware Update"
This code is then required to "flash" the Firmware on the system to the correct level.
Note: Detailed instructions on the update procedure are contained in the readme
file on the downloadable diskette image.
WORKAROUND:
As an alternative to the System Management firmware upgrade, a workaround is to power off the system
and then power on the system.
The system should boot up normally after the cold-boot.
DETAILS:
This behavior is due to a problem with the 133MHz FSB Intel processor.
This has been documented by Intel in an errata for the processor and is planned to be corrected in future
processor production.
The System Management firmware will provide a workaround to the Intel Pentium III processor problem.
