Abstract: AMD ETHERNET NT DRIVER V4.10 GENERATES WARNING IN EVENT LOG

SYMPTOM:

Warning message from NT operating system at startup time that at least one service had an error.
The NT event log will show the following message:

"The PCnet DMI service depends on the following non-existent service: WIN32SL"

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

FIX:

The problem is fixed in version 4.12 of the AMD device driver.
This driver is available from the 2.08 diskette (or later) image The IBM Netfinity 10/100 Fault Tolerant Adapter Device Driver Diskette, Version 2.08, (09n7401.exe) is available from the following URL:

http://www.pc.ibm.com/searchfiles.html
search on "09n7401"

The corresponding text file (09n7401.txt) is viewable on-line and may be printed.

To create the update diskette; the downloaded file (09n7401.exe) is a self-extracting executable file that will prompt for a diskette.
Follow instructions on the display to create the diskette.

WORKAROUND:

To prevent the warning messages, change the startup mode of the PCNET service from "automatic" to "manual".
This can be done by selecting 'Control Panel', then 'Services', then selecting the PCNET service, pressing the 'Startup...' button and making the appropriate change.

Note: The warning message can also be prevented by installing the Windows DMI service layer.

DETAILS:

In Windows NT, the startup mode of the AMD adapter's DMI service (PCNET) defaults to "automatic".

The PCNET service will try to register with the Windows operating system DMI service layer code.
If the Windows DMI service layer code is not loaded on the machine, this will result in a warning message and an entry in the NT Event Viewer.

This will not cause any operational problems as the PCNET service is not required for normal adapter operation.
The PCNET service is used for Hot Swap operations.

Note: This problem only occurs with version 4.10 of the NT driver.
