Abstract: NETFINITY 5000: MAY NOT BOOT TO OPERATING SYSTEM

SYMPTOM:

•  Instead of booting to the operating system, the Netfinity 5000 server  intermittently boots to the insert diskette screen.
•  During POST, at the point where the ServeRAID BIOS should load, a message  that includes "Enable BIOS press Ctrl l-I", then, ServeRAID BIOS does not load.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

•  The system is any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:

    a Netfinity 5000 server, Type 8659, any Model.

•  The system is configured with the following option(s):

    a Netfinity ServeRAID-3H Ultra2 SCSI Adapter, Option P/N 01K7207, FRU P/N 01K7396.

    a Netfinity ServeRAID-3HB Ultra2 SCSI Adapter, Option P/N 37L6086, FRU P/N 01K7396 (adapter),
    FRU P/N 09L2105 (cache).

    a Netfinity ServeRAID-3L Ultra2 SCSI Adapter, Option P/N 01K7364, FRU P/N 01K7352.

•  The BIOS levels affected are:

    14 and lower

•  The operating system is located on the drives connected to the ServeRAID adapter.
•  The system has the described symptom.

FIX:

Upgrade the Netfinity 5000 system BIOS to level 15 or higher using the IBM Netfinity 5000 Flash BIOS Update Diskette Version 1.12 or higher.

To create a BIOS update diskette; the downloaded file (09n7696.exe) is a self-extracting executable file that will prompt for a diskette. Follow instructions on the display to create the diskette.
