FIX:

This behavior is fixed in the latest firmware for the Advanced Systems Management Processor.

For the 5000:

Download and apply "IBM Netfinity 5000 Advanced System
Management Processor Firmware Update Diskette,
Version 2.10 " or higher.


For the 5500:

Download and apply "IBM Netfinity 5500 Advanced System
Management Processor Firmware Update Diskette,
Version 2.10 " or higher.


For the 5500-M10

Download and apply "IBM Netfinity 5500 M10 Advanced
System Management Processor Firmware Update Diskette,
Version 2.10 " or higher


For the 5500-M20:

Download and apply "IBM Netfinity 5500 M20 Advanced
System Management Processor Firmware Update Diskette,
Version 2.10 " or higher.

DETAILS:

The problem occurs when there is data coming into COM A while the system is in POST.
When the system is in POST or off, the Advanced Systems Management Processor controls the port and it tries to interpret the information coming in.

This incoming data can put the Service Processor into a state where it is not functioning.
This only happens if you have a device that is sending data to the port.

This is fixed in the latest version of the Advanced Systems Management Processor firmware for the systems affected.
