Abstract: NETFINITY 1000/3000: PCI ERROR CAUSED BY ADDING ISA ADAPTER
SYMPTOM:
When adding ISA adapters and using the ISA Legacy Resources to reserve memory, the system will boot with an
'1801- no memory to shadow ROM' error.
PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
a Netfinity 3000 server, Type 8476, any Model.
a Netfinity 1000 server, Type 8477, any Model.
1.27 or below
FIX:
http://www.pc.ibm.com/searchfiles.html
search on "Netfinity 3000 BIOS" or "Netfinity 1000 BIOS"
DETAILS:
When installing an older PCI adapter (non PCI v. 2.2) that requests memory below 1MB in conjunction with an ISA adapter
that requires memory to be reserved, PCI adapters that require 32K (e.g. ADAPTEC 2940) or more ROM will produce an 1801 error.
This happens because there are 2 16K blocks of memory instead of a single contiguous 32K block of available memory.
The new BIOS will accommodate PCI adapters that require up to 32K.
Some PCI adapters require more than 32K and in these cases, the error will still be present as there are no more resources
to accommodate this much memory.
In situations where more memory is required, it can become necessary to disable resources that are not being utilized.
Disabling USB support and non utilized parallel and serial ports can free up even more resources.
