New microcode is now available for some 80pin 9.1GB and 18.2GB Hard Disk Drives.

ABSTRACT:

New microcode improves "robustness" of specific Hard Disk Drive's Internal Diagnostics.

ISOLATION AIDS:

•  Any system configured with any of the following Hard Disk Drives (HDDs):
  •  Netfinity 9.1GB Wide Ultra SCSI SCA-2 SL HDD, Option P/N 01K8053, FRU P/N 59H7000.
  •  Netfinity 18.2GB Wide Ultra SCSI SCA-2 HDD, Option P/N 01K8055, FRU P/N 37L5725.
  •  Netfinity 18.2GB Wide Ultra SCSI SCA-2 SL HDD, Option P/N 02K0439, FRU P/N 36L8651.
  •  Netfinity EXP10 18.2GB Wide Ultra SCSI SCA-2 HDD, Option P/N 01K8501, FRU P/N 59H6997.
  •  Netfinity EXP10 9.1GB 10K Wide Ultra SCSI SCA-2 HDD, Option P/N 02K0477, FRU P/N 36L8650.

FIX:

Apply the IBM Drive Update Program to the HDD(s) by flashing with new microcode.

The four (4) IBM Drive Update Program image files are available from the following URL:

The corresponding text files are viewable online and may be printed.

Note: When the program is started, it may find other hard files in the system that it can upgrade.
It is recommended that these also be upgraded.

To create the update diskettes; downloaded the four (4) ".exe" files listed after searching on IBM Drive Update Program.
These files are self-extracting executable files that will prompt for diskettes.
Follow instructions on the display to create the diskettes.

DETAILS:

Hard Disk Drives periodically perform internal diagnostics.
The 4F flash level and/or SAB0 Flash level and higher code improves the robustness of the drive's internal diagnostics, eliminating potential false diagnostic failure.

In addition to the elimination of the false diagnostic failures,

•  All firmware upgrade versions enhance the error recovery robustness of the firmware.
•  Firmware version 4F made improvements to PFA functions, fixes a communication problem between the drive and  controller if the drive is power cycled independently of the controller, and fixes a rare problem in a multi-initiator  environment and enhancements to logging features.
•  Firmware upgrade SAB0 fixes a problem in a multi-initiator environment and enhancements to logging features.
