Abstract: TRAPS UNDER WINDOWS NT 4.0 RUNNING SMP


SYMPTOM:

The System Traps at a blue screen in Windows NT 4.0 upon reboot of the system after upgrading a single processor to Multi-processors
(i.e. Uni-Processor Mode Kernel to Multi-Processor Mode Kernel).


PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

All of the following must be true for this Tip to apply:

        a Netfinity 7000-M10 server, Type 8680, any Model.
        a Netfinity 7000 server, Type 8651, any Model.
        a Netfinity 5500-M20 server, Type 8662, any Model.
        a Netfinity 5500-M10 server, Type 8661, any Model.
        a Netfinity 5500 server, Type 8660, any Model.
        a Netfinity 5000 server, Type 8659, any Model.
        a Netfinity 3500 server, Type 8644, any Model.
        a Netfinity 3000 server, Type 8476, any Model.
        a Netfinity 1000 server, Type 8477, any Model.
        a PC Server 720, Type 8642, any Model.
        a PC Server 704, Type 8650, any Model.
        a PC Server 520, Type 8641, any Model.
        a PC Server 330, Type 8640, any Model.
        a PC Server 325, Type 8639, any Model.
        a PC Server 320, Type 8640, any Model.


FIX:

  1.  Recover the boot process of Windows NT 4.0 with the Emergency Recovery Disks.
  2.  Uninstall the Service pack.
  3.  Re-Install Windows NT 4.0 (with both processors installed).
     During the installation of Windows NT 4.0, the install program will detect the original copy of NT and ask if you  want to "Upgrade" or "Install" a new copy.

      -IMPORTANT- You MUST choose "Upgrade" in order to save the Registry.  Otherwise, the installation will create a new one.

  4.  Reinstall the Service Pack.

    Note: If the Emergency Recovery Disks are not available, the following steps apply:

    1.  Re-install Windows NT with BOTH Processors installed (see step 3 above).
    2.  Install the Service Pack.
