Abstract: SYSTEM GENERATES FALSE FAN ALERT

SYMPTOM:

Fan number 3 issues an alert on the diagnostics panel but the fan is still in motion and the system continues to run.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

a Netfinity 5500-M20 server, Type 8662, any Model.
a Netfinity 5500-M10 server, Type 8661, any Model.
a Netfinity 5500 server, Type 8660, any Model.

FIX:

Replace the planar with the proper FRU, as listed below:

  FRU         | TYPE | MODEL
  ------------+------+----------------------------------------
  P/N 01K7213 | 8660 | 11U, 11X, 1RU, 1RX, 41U, 41X, 42U, 42X,
              |      | 4RU, 4RX, 4SU, 4SX, 51U, 51X, 52U, 52X,
              |      | 5RU, 5RX, 5SU or 5SX.
              |      |
  P/N 36L9446 | 8660 | 61U, 61X, 62U, 62X, 6RU, 6RX, 6SU, 6SX.
              |      |
  P/N 36L9482 | 8661 | all models
              |      |
  P/N 28L0714 | 8662 | all models
  ------------------------------------------------------------

DETAILS:

The component at U35 location on the planar was replaced with a similar device, but has functional performance and timing significantly different (less) than the correct component.
The logic functions are identical.
The result is that the system may report a false fan error due to parametric differences of these components.
