This Service Aid tip addresses Flash BIOS requirements when replacing planars in IBM systems equipped with Intel Pentium II, Pentium III, and Intel Celeron processors.



This tip applies to all IBM Commercial Desktop, IntelliStation, and IBM Netfinity machine types that may be equipped with any speed (MHz) of the above Intel processors.

  * Planar replacement in systems that utilize Intel Pentium II,*
  * Pentium III, and Intel Celeron processors will require that *
  * the system flash BIOS be updated with the current level of  *
  * BIOS at the time of planar replacement.                     *

After replacing the planar and restarting the system, a servicer may be presented with the following POST error message:

"167 No Processor BIOS Update Found"

In almost all circumstances, the system will launch the F1 Setup utility.
After exiting the F1 Setup utility and attempting to start the operating system, the servicer may see the following, or similar error message:

"1962 No Operating System Found"

This error message, or sequence of error messages may differ slightly depending on the machine type and model of system being serviced.
In some circumstances, the operating system may start successfully and appear to function normally.

If this occurs, it is STRONGLY recommended that the servicer or customer obtain the latest level of flash BIOS and update the system BIOS to ensure that any necessary processor code updates are loaded to support the installed processor.
