REBUILDING MULTI DDD DRIVES ACROSS MORE THAN ONE ARRAY

SYMPTOM:

Multiple DDD drives located across multiple arrays.
Hot Swap Rebuild is enabled.
One (1) HDD is located at Channel 1, Drive ID 0.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

The system is any of the following IBM servers:

a Netfinity 7000-M10 server, Type 8680, any Model. a Netfinity 7000 server, Type 8651, any Model. a Netfinity 5500-M10 server, Type 8661, any Model. a Netfinity 5500 server, Type 8660, any Model. a Netfinity 5000 server, Type 8659, any Model. a Netfinity 3500 server, Type 8644, any Model. a Netfinity 3000 server, Type 8476, any Model. a PC Server 704, Type 8650, any Model. a PC Server 720, Type 8642, any Model. a PC Server 520, Type 8641, any Model. a PC Server 330, Type 8640, any Model. a PC Server 325, Type 8639, any Model. a PC Server 320, Type 8640, any Model. a PC Server 315, Type 8638, any Model. a PC Server 310, Type 8639, any Model.

The system is configured with one (1) or more of the following:

Onboard ServeRAID
PC ServeRAID SCSI Adapter, Option p/n70G8489
ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter, Option p/n76H3584
Netfinity ServeRAID-3H Ultra2 SCSI Adapter, Option p/n01K7207
Netfinity ServeRAID-3L Ultra2 SCSI Adapter, Option p/n01K7364

The system has multiple DDD drives.
The system has multiple arrays.
The system has Hot Swap Rebuild enabled.
The system has one of the DDD drives located at Channel 1, Drive ID 0.
All Firmware levels prior to and including 3.11 for the ServeRAID III, 2.88 for the ServeRAID II and onboard controllers, and 2.25 for the ServeRAID I.
The system's Diagnostics Pass

FIX:

This problem will be fixed in next BIOS/Firmware release.
The target date for the release is scheduled for: May/June, 1999.

WORKAROUND:

In order to avoid this problem, do NOT replace the Channel 1, Drive ID 0 DDD drive first.
Rebuild the other drive (wherever it might be), and upon its successful conclusion rebuild the DDD drive at Channel 1, Drive ID 0.

DETAILS:

The default Hot Swap Rebuild program will look to rebuild to Channel 1, Drive ID 0.
If multiple logical drives are in a Critical state, then they all will attempt to rebuild to the Channel 1, Drive ID 0 at the same time.
