Abstract: INABILITY to HOT-ADD PCI DEVICES with 4GB of MEMORY

TEXT:

Inability to hot-add PCI Devices with 4GB of memory.

SYMPTOM:

The Hot-Plug wizard may return the error "PCI Resources required by this device could not be allocated" when attempting to hot-add an adapter to a system with 4GB of memory.

This failure ONLY occurs on hot add and will work O.K. on a hot replace because memory space was previously allocated for that slot.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

FIX:

There is not a permanent fix available at time of writing. This condition will remain until new Windows NT hotplug drivers are released. The new hotplug drivers will be released by Microsoft for Windows NT 4.0. The new hotplug Device Driver will also be added to Windows NT 5.0, when available.

WORKAROUND:

Prior to loading hotplug adapters, set memory at less than 4GB. Load adapters and then reset memory to 4GB.
