Abstract: ECA004, REPLACEMENT 8MB MEMORY in 8640

PURPOSE:
This ECA provides replacement of affected 8MB memory SIMMs in PC SERVER 300 and 320 systems (machine type 8640).

This ECA will expire February 23, 2002

                          MFG. BEFORE MARCH 96
                          (MFG DATE: 603)

PHYSICAL CHECK:

Systems manufactured after March 01, 1996 (MFG DATE: 603 and later on the rear serial number label) were not shipped with any of the affected memory. Unless additional 8MB memory options were added to the system, these systems are not at risk. The date-of-manufacture is printed on the original IBM system carton and on the rear system serial number label.

If the system was manufactured prior to March 01, 1996, the 8MB memory SIMMs must be physically inspected to determine eligibility for replacement under this ECA. Affected SIMMs are 8MB parity FRU P/N 73G3234 (Option P/N 92G7203) with PRODUCT CODE V6DU, V6DN, V6EF, AND V6EL. SIMMs with any other Product Code are not affected.

The Product Code is located on the SIMM barcode label, or on the top left corner of the SIMM card.

DETAIL:

PC SERVER 300 and 320 systems with the affected 8MB memory may exhibit memory related problems, such as system hang, trap, or failure to boot the operating system completely. Failures will probably be intermittent, and vary depending on how much memory is installed.

These memory failures are limited to the 8MB memory SIMMs with Product Codes identified above, and only when they are installed in a PC SERVER 300 OR 320 system (MicroChannel/PCI or EISA/PCI). 8MB SIMMs with the above Product Codes are not eligible for ECA replacement when installed in other systems.

REPLACE ELIGIBLE MEMORY WITH FRU P/N 73G3234. Although the FRU number has not changed, current Option, FRU, and Manufacturing stock do not contain affected SIMMs. DUE TO EXISTING FIELD STOCK LEVELS, YOU SHOULD EXAMINE SIMMs BEFORE INSTALLATION TO ENSURE THEY ARE NOT AFFECTED.

NOTES: IBM/TSS CEs should record all time and parts to Service Code 33, D/T8640, ECA004, Other Office 990.

Return all replaced memory via normal UPR procedures.

This ECA will expire February 23, 2002
