Abstract: AIC78XX FAILED to LOAD in NT when USING SERVERGUIDE

SYMPTOM:

After installing Windows NT Server 4.0 with ServerGuide 4.0.5, using the Customized installation with Setup Diskette method on a Netfinity 7000 M10, Type 8680, system with an IBM PC Server SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI Adapter II, the following error will occur:

At least one service or driver failed during system
startup. Use event viewer to examine the event log for
details.

In the Event viewer the error will be :

Event ID : 7026
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed
to load : aic78xx.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

FIX:

None, at this time.

WORKAROUND:

After Windows NT Server 4.0 is installed, from to the Control Panel run the SCSI Adapters utility, go to the Drivers section and remove the driver which is in Not Started state (Adaptec AHA-294x/AHA-394x/AIC-78xx SCSI Controller).

DETAILS:

During the installation of Windows NT Server 4.0, in the Windows NT Server Setup screen the NT Setup program will attempt to detect mass storage devices in the computer. The NT Setup program will detect and install the AHA-294x/AHA-394x/AIC-78XX SCSI Controller (aic78xx driver), then the customer will install the correct driver for the IBM Netfinity SCSI-2 Fast/Wide PCI Adapter II (aicdrv driver is the correct Adaptec driver to use in the IBM Netfinity 7000 M10 server) using the "7800 Family Manager for IBM Netfinity 7000 M10" diskette created in ServerGuide. This means that two drivers will be installed to control the same SCSI adapter, the AICDRV driver (which will start successfully) and the AIC78xx driver (this is an old driver which has to be removed).
