P60/d floppy read error / Windows nt


PROBLEM - If Windows NT is installed in the P60/D from floppy diskettes, the installation will fail. diskette read errors occur with Microsoft and SMC37665 super I/O controller.

Machines AFFECTED - Valuepoint 6384 P60/D systems.

SOLUTION - The problem is caused by an unreliable status bit in the SMC665 chip. The next version of Windows NT (driver) release will fix this problem. The following steps are used to install the current version of Windows NT:

NOTE: You will need floppy.sys to install Windows nt, it is available from: SMC BBS (516)-273-4936 or the Microsoft BBS (206)-936-6735

Install Procedure:



a) Windows NT with fat file system


1. follow the normal install procedure until diskette #9 install

is complete.

2. on reboot (before diskette #10) install and boot the system with

a DOS diskette containing floppy.sys.

3. copy the update floppy.sys over the existing one on the hardfile.

eg. c:\winnt\system\drivers\floppy.sys

4. remove the DOS diskette and re-boot under Windows NT completing

the install starting with diskette #10.


b) Windows NT with NTFS file system


1. follow the install procedure until diskette #9 install is

complete.

2. on reboot (before diskette #10) install and boot the system with

DOS diskette containing floppy.sys.

3. rename old floppy.sys on the hardfile to floppy.old.

eg. c:\winnt\system\drivers\floppy.sys

4. copy the new floppy.sys to the hardfile

eg. c:\winnt\system\drivers\floppy.sys

5. remove the DOS diskette and re-boot under Windows NT completing

the install starting with diskette #10.
