This Processor update can be installed on one of the following computers.
8556 SX, 8556 SLC, 8557 SX, 8557 SLC or 8557 SLC
The upgrade kit contain:
- 486SLC2 Processor Upgrade
- Plastic stand-off
- Math Coprocessor removal tool
- Plastic guide (for installing processor upgrade)
- Reference Diskette
- Diagnostic Diskette
- Label
Installing the 486SLC2 Processor Upgrade in a Model 56 or 57 Computer
- STEP Comparing the Version of the System Partition
- Turn on the computer
- Wait until the self-test finish after the computer beeps. Press and hold
Ctrl+Alt+Del, then release the keys. When the cursor moves to the top-right corner
of the screen, press and hold Ctrl+Alt+Ins, then release the keys.
- When the IBM logo screen appears, press Pause. Find the version number on the
IBM logo screen.
- If the Original Version Number is lower than the version of the new Reference Diskette
then go to STEP 2.
- If the Original Version Number is equal or greater then go to STEP 6.
- STEP Making a Backup Copy of the System Partition.
- Press Enter to go to the Main Menu of the system programs.
- Select Backup/Restore system programs. Then select Backup the System Partition, and follow
the instructions on the screen.
If you receive the message: The diskette does not have enough storage
for the entire System Partition then go to STEP 3.
- When the copy is complete, remove the diskette and label the diskette.
- STEP Recording a Customized Configuration
If you do not have a customized configuration go to STEP 4.
- If you have ever made a change to the Change configuration screen, select
View configuration and record all the information on this screen, and any subsequent
screens for this selecting. Press the Print Screen key if you have a printer attached.
Then press F3 until you return to the Main Menu of the system programs.
- If you have ever made a change to the Set and View SCSI Device Configuration screen,
select Set and View SCSI Device Configuration and record all the information on this screen,
and any subsequent screens for this selection. Press the Print Screen key if their is a printer attached.

- If you have changed the selectable drive-startup sequence, select Set features from the Main Menu of the
system programs and press Enter. Then select Set startup sequence and press Enter.
- Read the warning screen that appears, then press Enter
- Record the current selectable drive-startup sequence. Press the Print Screen key if you have a printer attached.
Then press F3 until you return to the Main Menu of the system program.
- STEP Installing the new Version of the System Programs
This procedure writes over all existing files in the System Partition. You must have either a current backup
copy of the System Partition or all the option diskettes so you can reinstall the option files.
- Insert the New Reference Diskette into the default drive (usually drive A) and restart the computer by turning it off and then turning it on.
- At the Main Menu of the system programs select Backup/Restore system programs
- Select Restore the System Partition and carefully follow the instructions on the screen.
- When the restoration is completed, press F3 to return to the Main Menu of the system programs.
Go to STEP 5.
- STEP Copying the Option Files.
- Remove the new Reference Diskette from the default drive.
- Restart the computer by turning it off and then turning it on.
Note If an error message screen appears after the system restarts asking
Automatically configure the system? (Y/N) press N and go to step 4 below.
- Wait until the self-test finish after the computer beeps. Press and hold
Ctrl+Alt+Del, and release the keys. When the cursor moves to the top-right corner of
the screen, press and hold Ctrl+Alt+Ins, and release the keys.
- Use the up-to-date backup copy of the System Partition and do step A.
If you do not have an up-to-date backup copy of the System Partition because you were unable to make one
then go to step B.
STEP A
Select Copy an option diskette from the Main Menu of the system programs.
When a message appears asking you to insert a diskette, insert the backup copy of the
System Partition you created previously, into the default drive.
STEP B
Select Copy an option diskette from the Main Menu of the system programs.
When a message appears asking you to insert a diskette, insert one of your option
diskettes into the default drive.
You have completed installing the new version of the system programs. Turn off the
computer and follow the 486SLC2 Processor HW-Installation instruction.

- If an Math Coprocessor is installed in the socket connector on the system board, then remove
now this Coprocessor. (and also an math-Coprocessor empty socket)
- Install the plastic guide and plastic insert, that came with the upgrade, on the system board.
- If you have previously removed a Math Coprocessor, you should now reinstall this Coprocessor
into the 486SLC2 Processor Upgrade board.
- Install the 486SLC2 Processor Upgrade board until the upgrade PIN's are fully-seated, and the edge-snaps
click into place.
- Last, but not least, install the shipped Label (marked P3) update.
- Be sure all cables and components are in place before power-on the system.
- Power-ON the system and run the autom. reconfiguration.
- Test the installed OPTION and if OK ... then at last, but also very important
RESTORE the CUSTOMIZED CONFIGURATION and make a
New BACKUP COPY of the SYSTEM PARTITION
