2.0 Chapter 2. Using the Installation Aid
You can accomplish the entire installation of the LAN Support Program
Custom using the Installation Aid. You can select and install adapter
device drivers and view and change all the device driver parameters,
including the NETBIOS parameters. The Installation Aid configures and
installs the program by copying files to the working copy, editing the
control file CONFIG.SYS, and, if necessary, editing AUTOEXEC.BAT.
If the working copy already has a CONFIG.SYS file, the Installation Aid
saves it by copying it and giving it a unique numerical file extension
(for example, CONFIG.001).
NOTE: A description of each parameter is available using the Installation
Aid. To see the description, go to the configuration panel that displays
the device drivers to be installed. Place the cursor on the field for the
device driver, and press F5. On the next panel (for changing parameters),
place the cursor on the value of the parameter, and press F1 (Help).
2.1 Overview of the Installation Aid
The Installation Aid installs device drivers for the installed adapter and
provides default values for any device driver parameters that are not
specified during the configuration.
2.1.1 Information Flow of the Installation Aid Panels
The information flow of the Installation Aid is as follows:
1. General information panels that describe the program.
2. A setup panel that requests information about the configuration, such
as whether you are updating an existing configuration.
3. A configuration panel that provides DXMC0MOD.SYS as the adapter driver
and DXMT0MOD.SYS as the protocol driver. You can press F6 from this
panel to add or remove the device drivers or you can press F5 to view
or change the device driver parameters.
4. A completion panel that informs you that the installation is complete
and tells you how to activate the program.
Help panels and message panels guide you as you complete the installation.
If an error occurs, an error message is displayed.
2.2 Using the Installation Aid
Before you use the Installation Aid, you must prepare your computer for
installation and make the backup copy of the LAN Support Program Custom
Program Diskette.
2.2.1 Preparing the Computer
° If you will be starting the computer from a fixed disk, make sure that
DOS 3.3 or higher has been installed on the fixed disk. Use the DOS
VER command to check the DOS level. If you must reformat your fixed
disk, be sure to back up your files. See the IBM Personal Computer
Disk Operating System User's Guide for your version of DOS for
instructions.
° If you will be starting the computer from a diskette (instead of a
fixed disk), be sure that you have a formatted diskette for use as the
working copy. It must be formatted as a DOS 3.3 or higher system
diskette. Use the DOS FORMAT command with the /S option to format it,
if it is not already formatted.
2.2.2 Making a Backup Copy
To make a backup copy of the LAN Support Program Custom Program Diskette,
use the DOS DISKCOPY command, or copy the contents of the diskette to the
fixed disk. If you copy the files to a fixed disk, maintain the directory
structure found on the Program Diskette. When running the Installation
Aid, use the backup copy and keep the original in a safe place.
2.2.3 Installing the LAN Support Program Custom with the Installation Aid
1. Perform one of the following steps:
a. If you plan to run the Installation Aid from a diskette, insert
the backup copy of the LAN Support Program Custom Program Diskette
into the diskette drive. Make the diskette drive the current
drive.
b. If you plan to run the Installation Aid from a fixed disk, set the
fixed disk as the current drive and make the directory in which
the LAN Support Program Custom files are located the current
directory. If you plan to install the working copy of the LAN
Support Program Custom on the same fixed disk, be sure you give
the target directory a different name from the source directory.
2. Type:
DXMAID
and press Enter.
3. Select the responses and type in the requested information on the
Installation Aid panels.
4. If you need more information about a field, place the cursor on the
field and press F1 for help. You can press F1 from a help panel for
another layer of help.
5. If you need to add or remove any device drivers, press F6 on the
configuration panel that shows the device drivers to be installed.
Press F5 on this same panel to view or change device driver
parameters. Pressing F6 or F5 brings up the appropriate selection
panel.
6. To see a description of one of the parameters, place a cursor on the
value of the parameter on the parameter selection panel. When you
press F1 (Help), the description of the parameter is displayed.
7. When the installation is complete, the Installation Aid returns you to
DOS. The LAN Support Program has been copied to your target disk.
This is now your working copy. You will not need the original or
backup copy of the LAN Support Program Custom Program Diskette for
everyday operation. You will need this diskette only if you want to
change your configuration later or if your working copy is damaged.
A new CONFIG.SYS has been created on the working copy with the
commands to load the appropriate adapter support when the computer is
started. If you configured the program for the first time and did not
alter any parameters, default values are assumed.
If you already had a CONFIG.SYS file on the working copy, the
Installation Aid has created a new one and saved the previous file
with the same file name and a unique numeric extension. The commands
that were in the original control files are still present in the new
CONFIG.SYS file, but the commands to initiate the LAN Support Program
Custom have been added.
8. If you load the LAN Support Program Custom from a diskette, insert the
working copy into the diskette drive. If you load from the fixed
disk, be sure to remove any diskettes from the diskette drives. To
activate the program, press and hold Ctrl and Alt; then, press Del.
Release all keys.
A copyright statement will be displayed. Look for messages. If there
are no messages or if there are only information messages, the LAN
Support Program Custom is correctly loaded. If any error messages are
displayed, the LAN Support Program Custom may not be correctly
installed; see Appendix A, "Messages." For additional help, see
Chapter 6, "Recommendations and Problem Solving." If no LAN Support
Program Custom copyright statement is displayed, the LAN Support
Program Custom is not installed or has been removed. In this case,
make a new backup copy and reinstall the program.
2.3 Reconfiguring with LAN Support Program Custom
One of the options on the setup panel on the Installation Aid is to update
an existing configuration. To reconfigure, answer Yes to this question.
Be sure that you specify the target drive and directory correctly, because
the target drive and directory identify the working copy. The LAN Support
Program Custom Installation Aid can be used to update a working copy that
was made from a stand-alone version of the LAN Support Program. If you
reconfigure from a stand-alone version that supported an NDIS adapter, the
Installation Aid saves the AUTOEXEC.BAT file by copying it with a unique
numerical file extension. Then, it removes NETBIND from the AUTOEXEC.BAT
file.
2.4 Removing the LAN Support Program Custom Configuration
To remove the LAN Support Program Custom, run the Installation Aid and
deselect the adapter driver. The files will not be erased; instead, all
entries in the CONFIG.SYS file that load the LAN Support Program Custom
will be removed. The following steps explain the removal process:
1. Make sure that your current drive and directory contain the working
copy of the LAN Support Program Custom. Type:
DXMAID
and press Enter.
2. Accept the default response (Yes) to the question whether to update an
existing configuration. From the panel that displays the adapter
drivers to be installed, press F6 to remove or add the drivers. At
the panel that enables you to select the adapter drivers, press the
space bar to deselect the adapter driver; then, press F4 to save your
selections. You are returned to the panel that displays the adapter
driver. Press F4 again to install your configuration. Since you have
deselected the adapter driver, the Installation Aid removes the LAN
Support Program.
3. When the completion panel appears, follow its instructions to activate
the program. The Installation Aid creates a backup copy of the
CONFIG.SYS file and saves it with the same file name and a unique
numeric extension. Then, it removes all entries in the CONFIG.SYS
file that load the LAN Support Program.
4. If any of the following files are on the working copy, you may want to
erase them to save space:
° DXMA0MOD.SYS
° DXMC0MOD.SYS
° DXMT0MOD.SYS
° DXMC0MOD.NIF
° DXMT0MOD.NIF
° DXM.MSG.
After removing the configuration, restart the computer and look for
load-time messages. If you get any LAN Support Program Custom messages,
the LAN Support Program Custom configuration was not removed. Run the
Installation Aid again and be sure that no adapter driver is installed.
