Setting the Configuration Jumpers

Setting the Configuration Jumpers

The configuration-jumper positions are:

  1.  Master (factory setting)
  2.  Slave
  3.  Cable select
  4.  Slave Present (not used on all drives, see jumper label)
  5.  Disable Write Cache
  6.  Reserved
  7.  Reserved

  1.  If you are installing the Deskstar as the only drive on the IDE cable or  you are replacing the master drive on the IDE cable, verify that the jumper is in position 1.
  2.  If you are installing the Deskstar drive as the Slave Drive place the jumper  in position 2. Verify that the jumper on the master drive is in position 1 if the master drive  is also a Deskstar.

If the master drive is not a Deskstar, see the documentation that came with the drive.

  3.  If you place the jumper in position 3 , the IDE cable autom. assigns the master and slave settings based on the  position of the drive on the cable. Any other device on the IDE cable must also be set to Cable Select. See the documentation  that comes with the computer to determine if the computer requires to use position 3.

NOTE: Slave Present (position 4) only applies to the 4.2 GB capacity drive, options  76H7246, 76H7247 and 76H7248.

The Slave Present position is for the special case when you are installing the Deskstar as master with an older and slower slave drive  that does not comply with the ATA-3 communication standard.

If you are installing the Deskstar IDE drive as the master, you have a slave device on the same IDE cable, and the configuration-setup  program does not recognize the slave drive, turn off the computer and unplug the power cord. Open the computer, remove the jumper  from position 1 on the master drive and place it in position 4. Then close the computer, reattach the power cord, and restart the computer.

  4.  To improve performance, the drive has a 96 KB buffer for look-ahead and write-cache. If you want to disable the write-caching capability, place  a jumper in position 5.

Do not place jumpers in positions 6 and 7.
