Power Problems and Fault Light MAP

Power Problems and Fault Light MAP

-Attention- Turn off the power to the library.
If you came to this MAP only because the 24 V light is off, check for a different symptom and reenter the MAP with that symptom.
The tape library controller turns off the 24 V supply (indicated by the 24 V light) when it experiences positioning or cartridge retrieval problems, as well as more severe problems (such as failed shuttle servo motors).
For information about how to remove and install the field replaceable units (FRUs), see Chapter 4, 'Removal and Replacement Procedures'.

-Attention- Do not attempt to test voltages on the power supply.
The power supply must be under load to test for correct voltage.
Voltage can be checked only when running the diagnostic interface (see 'Remote Diagnostic Interface').

Step 1

Did you observe the red fault light on at the rear of the tape library?
Yes    Replace the library controller card (see 'Removing and Replacing the Controller').
After you have replaced the controller card, go to (below) Step 9.
    No    Go to Step 2.

Step 2

Is the power supply fan the only thing not running?
Yes    Replace the library power supply (see 'Removing and Replacing the Power Supply').
After you have replaced the power supply, go to (below) Step 9.
    No    Go to Step 3.

Step 3

Does the power problem (fan or lights ) seem to be isolated to the DLT7000 tape drive
(one or both, if two tape drives are installed)?
Yes    If two DLT7000 tape drives are installed and both tape drives exhibit the same problem,
skip the following procedure and answer no to the question following the procedure.
     In tape libraries with two DLT7000 tape drives, temporarily switch the tape drive positions;
that is, put drive A into the drive B position and drive B into the drive A position.
In tape libraries with only one DLT7000 tape drive, move the tape drive to the vacant position.
Note: For both types of libraries, make sure to return the drive to
its original position after this MAP is complete.
The SCSI cables and terminator do not need to be reconnected at this time.
Turn on the power to the library.
Does the problem remain with the DLT7000 tape drive in the new position?
Turn off the power to the library.
Yes Replace the DLT7000 tape drive.
Run the 'DLT7000 Tape Drive Diagnostic and Fix Verify Selections' on the new tape drive.
     Go to Step 9.
No Replace the FRUs in the following order, one at a time:
      1. Power Supply (see 'Removing and Replacing the Power Supply')
      2. Library Controller Card (see 'Removing and Replacing the Controller')
      3. Base Library
When you no longer have the power problem, turn off the power to the library and go to Step 9.

    No    Go to Step 5.

Step 4

Is the operator panel display working, but the contrast not acceptable?
Yes    Perform the procedure for adjusting the contrast
     (see 'Adjusting the Display Contrast').
Did the adjustment procedure correct the problem?
Yes Go to 'End of Call'.
     No Go to Step 5.

    No    Go to Step 5.

Step 5

Is the operator panel the only tape library component that is not functioning
(the library seems to initialize, and the host communications is working)?
Yes    Replace the FRUs in the following order, one at a time:
      1. LCD Assembly (see 'Removing and Replacing the LCD Assembly').
      2. Base Library
      3. Library Controller (see 'Removing and Replacing the Controller')
If replacing the first FRU does not correct the problem, repeat this
     step for the next FRU.
     Go to Step 9.

    No    Go to Step 6.

Is the operator panel the only tape library component that is not functioning?
(The library seems to initialize, and the host communications is working.)

Step 6

Are the control keys the only tape library component not functioning?
Note: The front door key must be in the 9 o'clock or 12 o'clock position to
   enable the control keys.
Yes    Replace the FRUs in the following order, one at a time:
      1. Base Library
      2. Library Controller (see 'Removing and Replacing the Controller')
If replacing the first FRU does not correct the problem, repeat this step
     for the next FRU
     Go to Step 9.
     No Go to Step 7.

Step 7

If you observed total power outage on the tape library and DLT7000 tape drives, check the following:

Did you find and correct one of the previous items?
Yes    Turn on the power to the library.
If you replaced a burned-out fuse, go to Step 8; otherwise, go to Step 9.

No    Replace the power supply (see 'Removing and Replacing the Power Supply').
     Go to Step 9.

Step 8

Did the fuse blow again?
Yes    Remove the DLT7000 tape drives and replace the fuse again.
Turn on the power to the library.
     Did the fuse blow again?
Yes Replace the FRUs in the following order, one at a time:
      1. Power Supply (see 'Removing and Replacing the Power Supply')
      2. Library Controller Card (see 'Removing and Replacing the Controller')
      3. Base Library
Turn on the power to the library.
When the fuse no longer blows, go to Step 9.
No Determine which DLT7000 tape drive is causing the
power supply fuse to blow and replace it. When finished, go to Step 9.

No    Before going to Step 9, make sure that the library's power supply fan is running.
If the fan is not running, turn off the power to the library and replace the power supply
(see 'Removing and Replacing the Power Supply').

Step 9

It is recommended that you run a library exerciser for 10 to 15 minutes to ensure problems do not recur.
Perform the tape drive load and unload test (see 'Tape Drive Load and Unload Test (DRVLDULD)').

Does the tape library power up properly, complete library initialization and any exerciser test, and properly remain powered up?

Note: The front door key must be in the 9 o'clock or 12 o'clock position to enable the control keys.
Yes    Go to 'End of Call'.

No    Replace the FRUs in the following order, one at a time.
      1. Power Supply (see 'Removing and Replacing the Power Supply')
      2. Library Controller Card (see 'Removing and Replacing the Controller')
      3. Base Library
After replacing each FRU, turn on the power to the library and repeat Step 9 until successful.
