NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEM SUPPORT - INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for OS/2 PSD:

If you have ServerGuide version 2.51 or greater, then follow the ServerGuide installation procedure.

  1.  Insert the IBM PC Server 720 Network Operating System Support Diskette into the diskette drive.
  2.  Copy the caverun.psd file from the os2 subdirectory to the OS2 subdirectory of the boot drive.

     For example: copy a:\os2\caverun.psd c:\os2

  3.  Shutdown and reboot machine.


INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for NETWARE SMP:

If installing on an IBM PC Server 720, a free engineering change must be installed before installing NetWare 4.1 SMP. This change is described in Retain record ID H132301 and announcement letter 196-036.

If you have the standalone NetWare SMP CD part number 172-000410-001 and an unencrypted NetWare 4.1 SMP license diskette, follow the installation instructions in README.SMP.

If you have ServerGuide version 2.4 and the 1 to 4 processor SMP license activation key, follow the installation instructions in README.SG.


INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for WINDOWS NT

Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 installation procedure for the IBM PC Server 720

The following information contains some important considerations for installing Microsoft Windows NT.

First: Flash the BIOS to at least Rev Level 07. The file on the IBM BBS and WebSite http://www.pc.ibm.com is 720BIOS.DSK. After making the disk, boot the diskette and follow the on screen directions.


IBM PC Server 720 8642-1ZS, 8642-2ZS, 8642-4ZS  (Array models)

Materials Required:



IBM SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Streaming RAID Adapter/A Option Diskette 
  1.  Start the server with the IBM SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Streaming RAID Adapter/A Option Diskette (1 of 2).

  2.   You must FORMAT every drive in the system, not initialize.
    1.  Choose Advanced functions from the main menu.
    2.  Choose FORMAT drive. With this option, FORMAT every hard drive installed in the system.

  3.  Configure your desired physical arrays and logical drives.

    1.  Create a 300 to 500 MB logical drive.

        DO NOT Initialize the logical drives.
       The drives should not be touched after formatting them from the above step!

  4.  If you do not have NT ServicePack 3, then download it from the  Microsoft ftp site. The ServicePack 3 is 7 diskettes and a readme  disk. To download the ServicePack from the Microsoft ftp site, do  the following:

    1.  ftp to: ftp.microsoft.com
    2.  login as: anonymous
    3.  cd bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/nt351/ussp3/i386/disks.35
    4.  type: bin
    5.  To disable interactive prompting, type: prompt
    6.  You may wish to specify a local directory by typing: lcd c:\path
    7.  type: mget

  5.  On the NT ServicePack 3, Disk 1, there is a file named NTKRNLMP.EX_.  Use the expand command to expand the file to NTKRNLMP.EXE. Then,  copy this file onto the original NT 3.51 Install Disk 1. The new  NTKRNLMP.EXE file is dated 10-7-95 and size 515,234.
  6.  Start the server using a DOS Disk and run FDISK to create an active  partition the size of the logical drive that was defined to install NT. You  don't need to format the partition, the NT install will do this.


NT Installation Diskette 
  1.  Start the server with the Windows NT Setup Boot diskette, and start  the installation process. When the message "Setup is inspecting  your computer's hardware information" appears on the screen, press F5.

     (Note: Pressing F5 will cause the installation program to ask for an another diskette in the process.)

  2.  The message "Setup could not determine the type of computer you  have, or you have chosen to manually specify the computer type" will appear.

     (Note: If you see a message prompting you to insert "Windows NT  Setup Disk 2," then you did not press F5 at the appropriate  time. Restart the server with the Windows NT Setup Boot diskette and start over.)

  3.  Select "other."
  4.  Insert the IBM PC Server 720 Network Operating System Support diskette and press Enter.
  5.  The PC Server 720 will be highlighted. Press Enter.
  6.  Follow the instructions on the screen until the Express/Custom menu appears.
  7.  Press C for Custom Setup.
  8.  Press S to Skip Mass Storage Detection.
  9.  Press S to Specify additional SCSI adapters.
  10.  Press Enter to select "other."
  11.  Insert "IBM SCSI-2 Fast/Wide Streaming RAID Adapter/A Option Diskette (2 of 2)" in drive A.
  12.  Press Enter to continue.
  13.  Select the device driver for NT Version 3.5, and then press Enter to continue.
  14.  Press Enter to avoid further detection of mass storage devices.
  15.  Continue following the instructions on the screen.
  16.  After completing the custom install of NT, apply ServicePack 3 before running any of the applications,  especially Disk Administrator.
  17.  After applying the Sevicepack 3, shutdown and restart the system, then run Disk Administrator and partition the drives.
  18.  If adding drives later on, you must FORMAT the drives as described above before defining the drives in an array.


IBM PC Server 720 8642-0Z0  (non-RAID model)

Materials Required:



Setting SCSI Host Controller parameters 
  1.  When the system is starting, watch the screen for a message that  SCSI BIOS has installed successfully. Press CTRL + A to invoke  the SCSISelect** utility program.
  2.  Select "Configure/View Host Adapter settings".
  3.  Select "Advanced Configuration Options".
  4.  Set Extended BIOS Translation for DOS Drives > 1 GByte to "disable."
  5.  Set Reverse Scan to "disable."
  6.  Select "SCSI DISK Utilities".
  7.  Select one of the hardfiles listed, then choose FORMAT the drive. Do this for every hardfile in the system.
  8.  If you do not have NT ServicePack 3, then download it from the Microsoft ftp site.  The ServicePack 3 is 7 diskettes and a readme disk. To download the Servicepack from the Microsoft ftp site,  do the following:

    1.  ftp to: ftp.microsoft.com
    2.  login as: anonymous
    3.  cd bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/usa/nt351/ussp3/i386/disks.35

  5.  The Server 720 will be highlighted. Press Enter.
  6.  Follow the instructions on the screen until the Express/Custom menu comes appears.
  7.  Press C for Custom Setup.
  8.  Press S to Skip Mass Storage Detection.
  9.  Press S to Specify additional SCSI adapters.
  10.  Press Enter to select "other."
  11.  Insert "Adaptec 7800 Family Manager Set Version 1.10" diskette in drive A.
  12.  Press Enter to continue.
  13.  Select the device driver for NT Version 3.5, and then press Enter to continue.
  14.  Press Enter to avoid further detection of mass storage devices.
  15.  Continue following the instructions on the screen.
  16.  After completing the custom install of NT, apply ServicePack 3
     BEFORE running any of the applications, especially Disk Administrator.
  17.  After applying the Sevicepack 3, shutdown and re-boot, then run  Disk Administrator and partition the drives.
