SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: The following operating systems support the IBM ThinkPad 760EL systems. Refer to the LIMITATIONS section for support issues unique to each operating system.
IBM PC DOS 7, J7.0/V
OS/2(R) Warp, Version 3 with and without WIN-OS/2
OS/2(R) Warp Connect, Version 3 with and without WIN-OS/2
OS/2 Warp 4 (*2)
MS-DOS Version 6.22
Microsoft Windows 95
Microsoft Windows Version 3.11/J3.1
Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.11
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 3.51 (*1)
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (*1)
Previous versions of the above operating systems are not supported, for example, PC DOS 6.3, OS/2 2.11, Microsoft Windows 3.0, and MS DOS 6.0.
LIMITATIONS:
WINDOWS NT WORKSTATION 4.0 AND 3.51 LIMITATIONS
The infrared features of this system are not supported when using Windows NT Workstation 4.0.
The CardBus function in PCMCIA cards is not supported when using Windows NT Workstation 4.0.
When using Windows NT Workstation 4.0 battery operating hours may be shorter depending on the memory size, and types of applications used. Windows NT Workstation 4.0 does not support Advanced Power Management functions such as CPU power saving or idle detection. Please pay close attention to the Fuel guage to monitor the battery
power remaining during barrery operation.
When using Windows NT Workstation 4.0, the PCMCIA card must be in- serted into the slot before Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is started. Inserting or removing the PCMCIA card after Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is started is not supported. Only cold insertion for PCMCIA cards is activated or supported.
Windows NT Workstation 4.0 supports IBM Dock I, IBM Dock II, IBM 1 SelectaDodk Base Model 1 and IBM SelectaDock I. However, hot/warm docking is not supported. You must only do cold docking.
When using Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and ISA adapter cards such as network adapter cards are used with an IBM docking unit, disable un- used system devices such as IR port and MWave modem, if available as the IRQ for the ISA card is constrained. On the ThinkPad 760 family, the default configuration for the system devices use many IRQs that constrains using the ISA cards in the docking unit. It is recommended that IRQ=7 be used if the default configuration is required when the ISA card is used, especially with the IBM Dock II.
The number of PCMCIA devices that is supported by Windows NT Workstation 4.0 is limited. Supported PCMCIA devices are listed in the Microsoft Windows NT Hardware Compatibility List.
In Windows NT 3.51, hibernation is not supported when the drive is formatted by NTFS.
OS/2 LIMITATIONS
In OS/2, hibernation is not supported when the drive is formatted by HPFS on a system that has more than 64MB of memory.
When using a CD-ROM drive and when a CD-i format CD is in the CD-ROM drive, the system may not start correctly when using OS/2 Warp. A fix will be provided under OS/2 Warp APAR PJ19669.
OS/2 Digital Video Player may fail to play some AVI format video files when using a CD-ROM drive.
When a second HDD is in the ThinkPad UltraBay, it cannot be formatted by the OS/2 Warp FDISK program after being assigned as the logical drive. A fix will be provided under OS/2 Warp APAR PJ19672.
Some optional features or applications may use the COM1 port. OS/2 Warp Version 3 will not load COM.SYS if the COM1 port is already in use. Only one such feature or application that uses the COM1 (for example, communications or PCMCIA) can be used at a time.
The OS/2 Warp FixPak XR0W009 is required for audio and video support for Indeo**-format video file playback and video capture functions.
SUSPEND/RESUME LIMITATIONS
When using Windows 3.11, ensure that the Advanced Power Management ( APM) is installed.
During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 60 mA at 12 V. During suspend mode, PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60 mA at 12 V.
Do NOT remove or install PC cards during suspend mode.
If the system is suspended/resumed during the following operations, unpredictable results may occur. The application should be closed before entering suspend or hibernation mode.
Audio record
Video playback or record
Active communications in DOS box (modem use) - application may
hang
DOS games
OTHER LIMITATIONS
When an external VGA CRT is attached, the display setting in the ThinkPad setup features must be set to LCD or CRT but not to both.
When SelectaDock Model I is being used with a SCSI driver installed, suspend/resume function and warm/hot docking are not supported. The exception is that Windows 95 supports warm/hot docking even when a SCSI driver is installed.
When PCI card or ISA card is being used with the SelectaDock Model I, suspend/resume mode is not supported.
A video capture adapter that requires VGA pass-through (video pass- through, VESA bus) is not supported by the 760EL and the IBM Docking Stations.
Simultaneous use of IR and other timing critical or computer intensive applications, such as communications and multimedia, is not recommended. This is not supported when using Windows NT Workstation4.0.
The Fixed mode of IR commumication should only be used with IR devices that support only this mode, not with ThinkPad systems. Windows NT Workstation 4.0 does not support the IR features of thissystem.
ESS Audio Device Driver is not CID installable.
PCMCIA LIMITATIONS
The ATA PCMCIA card is not supported when using Windows NT.
The CardBus function in PCMCIA cards is not supported when using Windows NT Workstation 4.0 or 3.51.
PCMCIA diagnostics programs usually do not recognize slot numbers greater than two. To diagnose a suspected faulty card, make sure the PCMCIA card is in one of the PCMCIA slots of the system unit, not in one of the optional docking solution PCMCIA slots.
Point enablers usually do not support slot numbers above two. If using a PCMCIA card with a point enabler, make sure that the card is in a slot on the system unit, not in one of the optional docking solution PCMCIA slots.
PC Card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also, point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer testing in their specific environments is recommended.
When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only one card to be used.
Before removing storage PCMCIA PC Cards such as hard disk, flash memory, or SRAM, the computer must be turned off or the PCMCIA slot must be powered off. Windows NT Workstation 4.0 does not support many of these types of PCMCIA cards.
OTHER TIPS AND HINTS
To support suspend/resume with Dock II, the SCSI IRQ should be set manually by using the SCSI option ROM utility so as not to conflict with other device resources. Windows NT does not support suspend/resume function.
When a PCI card or ISA card is being used with the SelectaDock Model I, suspend/resume is not supported.
Use Boot Manager when booting OS/2 Warp from a secondary drive.
To install OS/2 (OS/2 for Windows or OS/2 Warp) on the 760EL from CD-ROM versions, the optional CD-ROM drive and the optional external FDD enclosure (66G3618) are required.
When using the Redirector feature of the Connectivity Pack for the HP 100LX or HP 200LX to exchange data over an IR link at 115 Kbps, the ThinkPad 760EL should be configured as the requestor. Windows NT Workstation does not support the IR features of the system.
Video performance will be reduced when operating under the 64K or 16M color mode.
Continuous use of the HDD or CD-ROM drive, such as reading long video files, will impact battery life.
The system is designed so that the customer can install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card. Windows NT Workstation only supports cold insertion and removal of these cards.
The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external input device port.
When the FDD needs to be used together with the internal CD-ROM drive, the optional FDD external enclosure (66G3618) must be used.

SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
STANDARD SECURITY FEATURES FOR THE 9547: The electronic personalization feature is like a name tag on your ThinkPad. Your name, contact ad- dress, or phone number can be displayed on the screen when the system is turned on. This helps in case the ThinkPad is misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system's nonvolatile memory and is displayed with a password prompt.
Passwords
A power-on password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears:
Each time the system is turned on When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode
A supervisor password provides a higher level of security than the POP. The supervisor password protects the system functions from be- ing used by unauthorized users and protects the hardware configuration from unauthorized modification. The supervisor password prompt appears when the hardware configuration is changed.
An HDD password (HDP) protects HDD data from unauthorized users. Once HDP is set, data on the HDD cannot be accessed without the correct HDP. Because the HDP is stored in the HDD, the data remains
protected even if the HDD is removed to another system. The HDP prompt appears: Each time the system is turned on When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode. You can use the hook on the hard disk locking mechanism to tether the system with a user-selected padlock and chain or cable. You can attach the Kensington** lock to the keyhole on the side of the computer. This prevents the keyboard from opening and secures the internal devices under the keyboard.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
