1.3 Updating your ThinkPad System BIOS
Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you are strongly recommended to get the latest ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette and to update your system BIOS. Otherwise, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.

1.3.1 Building the System Program Service Diskette
To build the System Program Service Diskette, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Download the file to a temporary directory on your hard drive.
2. Insert a blank formatted disk into the diskette drive.
3. Run the file by double-clicking on it from Windows Explorer.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen and it will expand the image onto your diskette drive.

1.3.2 Using the System Program Service Diskette (2-3 min)
After creating the System Program Service Diskette follow the instructions listed below:

Note: You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. Also, if your computer is attached to a port replicator, docking station, or PC Card Enable, turn off your computer and detach it before proceeding.

1. Print or display on another computer the instructions that accompany the System Program Service Diskette.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3. Insert the System Program Service Diskette disk into the diskette drive and turn on the computer.
4. Select Read this first... from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
6. Select Update system program and press ENTER. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Warning: Do not turn off or suspend your computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND YOUR COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

STEP 2: Installing Windows 98

2.1 Installing Windows 98 (35-50 min)
When installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, it's recommended that you read any readme files that are available on the Windows 98 installation CD. These files will have important information about installing Windows 98.

To install Windows 98 on your ThinkPad from a blank hard drive, please follow the instructions provided below:

Note: Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you are strongly recommended to get the latest System Program Service Diskette and update your system BIOS. Also, it's recommended that you obtain from IBM all updated software that you will need to install on your ThinkPad after installing Windows 98. Lastly, IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled Windows 95 operating system, device drivers, and applications if you do not have a Recovery CD or Back-up CD with CD-ROM drive on your system.

1. Boot into DOS.
2. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
3. At the DOS prompt, type format C: and press ENTER, where the letter C: is the drive designation for your computer's hard drive that you want to install Windows 98 onto.

Warning: Formatting will destroy all information and data on that specified hard drive. Therefore, executing the command format C: at the DOS prompt will destroy all information, including the operating system, on the C: drive.

4. Next, at the DOS prompt, type D:\Win98\SETUP, where the letter (D:) is the drive designation for your computer's CD-ROM.
5. Press ENTER and follow any prompts that are presented on your screen until the installation has completed. If you encounter problems setting up Windows 98, refer to the setup.txt file that comes with the installation CD.
6. When the installation process is completed, your computer will be ready to run Windows 98.

Note: If you are installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad and are using the OS/2 Boot Manager, you may experience an exception error during the setup process. If this occurs, power-off and restart your computer. After restarting your computer, the Setup program will proceed with the installation of Windows 98.

2.2 Installing the ThinkPad Utility (2-3 min)
The ThinkPad Utility will allow you to select various features for your ThinkPad under Windows 98. Such features include: power management, Fuel-Gauge program, Personalization Editor, Alarm, and others. However, in order for your ThinkPad to fully utilize these features, you will need to install this utility on your computer after installing Windows 98. Three separate diskettes will need to be downloaded from IBM's Web site.

Please follow the instructions listed below to install the ThinkPad Utility on your computer:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the ThinkPad Utility Diskette for Windows 95 disk into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen. When the "Install" window appears on your screen, click on OK to proceed with the installation.
6. Choose the path to copy the files to - we recommend using the default path. Then click on OK.
7. The default choices are already checked on the "Installation Options" screen. Click on [Install] to start the installation process.
8. Insert the Utility Data Diskette I and Utility Diskette for DOS, Personalization disks into the diskette drive when prompted by the Setup program. After inserting each disk, confirm the drive letter is A:\ in the dialog box, and click on OK.
9. When installation has completed, remove any disk from the diskette drive, and restart your computer.

If your ThinkPad 760xx/765x model is listed as one of the following, you will need to install one additional utility: 760XD/XL and 765D/L.

To install this utility on your computer, please follow the instructions provided below:

10. Insert the Battery Installation Check Utility Diskette disk into the diskette drive.
11. Click: Start => Run.

The ThinkPad Mwave DSP software is not included in Windows 98, and therefore, will not be automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. To enable your ThinkPad's audio and telephony functionality, you will need to install the Mwave DSP software once Windows 98 is installed on your ThinkPad.

Note: (This note does not apply to the 760C/CD or 760L/LD models.) Before installing the Mwave DSP software on your system, please make certain that only the 'Texas Instruments PCI-1130 CardBus Controller' device is listed under the PCMCIA socket entry in the Device Manager. If the 'PCIC or compatible PCMCIA Controller' is also listed, you must remove this device from the Device Manager list, and restart your computer before installing the Mwave DSP software. Otherwise, failing to remove this device will cause the system to hang due to insufficient IRQs available when configuring the Mwave components.

To install the software on your system, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert Disk 1 of the Mwave DSP Features Diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on OK. This will start the Mwave ThinkPad Setup program.
5. When prompted, choose the path to copy the files to we recommend using the provided default path (C:\MWW). Then click on OK.
6. Insert Disk 2 and Disk 3 into the diskette drive when prompted by the Setup program. After inserting each disk, confirm the drive letter is A:\ in the dialog box, and click on OK.
7. When installation completes, remove any disk from the diskette drive, and click on YES to have the Setup program restart you machine.
8. Windows 98 will detected and configured all of the Mwave DSP components.
9. Click: Start => Run. Then type C:\MWW\install\setup in the 'Open' field and click on OK -- where C:\MWW is the default path or the specified location where the files were copied to under step 5.
10. Click on OK to confirm the installation has completed - this will make the Mwave applications accessible from the Start Menu.

Note: If you are installing Mwave DSP software on your ThinkPad for the first time or if the MIDI is not functional, you will need to install the Mwave DSP MIDI Features for Windows. This is a separate installation and will require six diskettes. For installation instructions, please refer section 2.4 of this document.

**** IMPORTANT ****
