AIX Version 4.3 Package Guide for LPP Installation
Base System InfoExplorer and Softcopy
Databases Packages
InfoExplorer is a text
retrieval tool with several navigation aids to help the user find
and manage information. The user can use InfoExplorer to
learn the AIX operating system and other software and
hardware. There are two versions of InfoExplorer: the ASCII
interface and the graphics interface. This installation information
is only for the ASCII interface. For the graphics version of
InfoExplorer installation, please refer to the
AIXwindows installation guide. The Base System InfoExplorer
package has one fileset, bos.info.rte; the other filesets are
included in the Base System InfoExplorer Database package.
The Base System InfoExplorer
Database software package, bos.info.[lang], contains
databases you can access with the InfoExplorer retrieval tool
installed with your Version 4.2 Base Operating System (BOS).
These databases contain hypertext information for BOS and other
licensed programs. The fileset names listed below are shipped with
the Version 4.2 BOS. Some other software products have separately
installable databases containing documentation for those products.

Special Migration Notes
Migrating from Version 3.2
If you install InfoExplorer
using the migration install, any Version 3.2
InfoExplorer databases are moved to new locations (%L
represents a locale such as En_US, De_DE, etc):
- If the Version 3.2 databases are
in /usr/lpp/info/%L, they are moved to
/usr/lpp/info/32/%L. The ispaths file is updated and
moved to /usr/lpp/info/data/32.
- If the Version 3.2 database are
in /usr/lpp/info/lib/%L, they are moved to
/usr/lpp/info/lib/32/%L. The ispaths file is updated
and moved to /usr/lpp/info/data/32.
To view your Version 3.2
databases, start InfoExplorer with the following command:
info -l 32
Any public libraries you installed
in /usr/lpp/info/data remain unchanged and can be started
with the same info command as used on Version 3.2.
Databases distributed by IBM on
Version 3.2 in the directory /usr/lpp/info/data have their
names changed to prevent a conflict with any new Version 4.2
database with the same name. The compilers database is renamed
compilers32. To view the Version 3.2 compilers database on
Version 4.2, enter the following command:
info -l compilers32
Migrating from Version 4.1
InfoExplorer requires that the
documentation databases within a specified library be of the same
level. You cannot have a mixture of 4.1 and 4.2 databases of the
same library installed on your system because InfoExplorer can not
access mixed-level databases correctly, and results are
unpredictable. To avoid having mixed levels of InfoExplorer
databases, when you install the 4.2 level bos.info.en_US.nav
fileset, any currently installed 4.1 level InfoExplorer databases
that are part of the /usr/lpp/info/lib/en_US/aix41 library
are automatically removed. Note the following:
- Before installing the 4.2
databases, make a note of which 4.1 level InfoExplorer database
filesets are installed. You will need to select their 4.2 level
versions to be installed. To list all the InfoExplorer database
filesets you have installed and at what levels, enter the following:
lslpp -qlc *info.en_US*
- All the InfoExplorer database
filesets that ship on the 4.2 media (excluding
bos.info.en_US.smit_help and pkg_gd) require that the
4.2 level bos.info.en_US.nav fileset be installed first.
Therefore, selecting any fileset under bos.info.en_US, any
licensed program's *.info.en_US package, or a fileset under a
licensed program's *.info.en_US package at the 4.2 level will
first install the 4.2 level bos.info.en_US.nav.
