Base Compatibility Function Package

The Base Compatibility Function package contains those commands, links, and tools that have been marked for removal from the base operating system. These commands are generally not standard-compliant commands and should only be applied as needed since the information and commands they contain will not be available in the next release of AIX.

Fileset Names

bos.compat.cmds AIX Version 4 Compatibility Commands

This fileset contains commands that are being removed from the AIX system. These commands are generally not standard-compliant commands, for example the copy and li commands are being removed.

bos.compat.imk Base System Locale Compatibility Links

This fileset provides input method keymaps and links which may be necessary for those applications that depend on the input method conventions used in Version 3.1.

bos.compat.lan LAN COMIO Compatibility Software

Provides a COMIO interface for Token Ring, Ethernet and FDDI devices, compatible with COMIO interface present in AIX Version 3.2.5 Supports usermode access only.

bos.compat.libs Version 3.2 Compatibility Library

This fileset provides the following printer libraries which will be removed in a future release of AIX:

bos.compat.links AIX Version 4 Compatibility Links

This fileset provides backwards compatibility for those links that were added in the Version 3.2 release for Diskless Support, but have been removed in the Version 4.1 release.

bos.compat.net Version 3.2 TCPIP Compatibility Commands

This fileset provides backwards compatibility for those links that were added in the Version 3.2 bosnet.obj product.

bos.compat.NetInstl Version 3.2 Network Installation Tools

This fileset provides the capability to serve Version 3.2 clients with a Version 4.1 server.

bos.compat.termcap Version 3.2 Termcap Source and Library

This fileset provides an older method of defining terminal definitions. Most people use terminfo. The library provides terminfo interface routines for curses applications. The same routines are provided by libcurses.a, as well.

bos.compat.termcap.data Version 3.2 Termcap Source Data

This fileset provides the termcap tabset files for various terminals.

Approximate Disk Space Required

The Base Compatibility Function package requires approximately 1.2 MB of disk space.

Special Installation Notes

Stop processes before installing another version of the software. To install Version 3.2 Network Installation Tools (bos.compat.NetInstl) fileset see the AIX Installation Guide.

Special Migration Notes

When installing the Version 3.2 Network Installation Tools (bos.compat.NetInstl), the /u/netinst/db/choices file is the only configurable file that must be saved when migrating from Version 3.2 to Version 4.1. This file contains a list of images available for installation and is saved automatically.
