About AIX System Dump

**************> QUESTION level 1 --> level 2 SPECIALIST <**************
My customer experienced system-abend with flashing 888.
At the time, his result of 'errpt -a' displays 'sysem dump = 0 byte'.
In his environment, /var/adm/ras/errlog and /dev/hd7(primary dump
device) are on the same pv, and /dev/hd7 is enough to make system dump.
So he can't understand why he couldn't get any dump.
Q. In what case do we experience such a dump-failure?
... I must say he didn't write down the dump code(888-102-mmm-ddd)
when it happened. Sorry for this lack of information.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Generally when a system crashes with Flashing 888's, the following
led codes indicate the type of dump taken and weather or not it
was complete. In your example, 888-102-mmm-ddd:
the 888 typically indicates that a dump was taken to the
primary dump device
the 102 shows that an interrupt occurred
the mmm is the type of dump (ie. 300=DSI,700=Program Interrupt,
etc)
the ddd is the status of the dump (ie. 0c4=partial,
0c0=complete, etc)
There is an informational FAX for dumps that can be found through
1-800-IBM-4-FAX regarding AIX System Dumps, including examples
of what the output should look like (the Document Number is 1770).
Reason why dumps occur vary, and can be caused by a variety of reasons.
Basically a dump analysis helps determine the nature of the crash
so it can be prevented in the future. Your customer may wish to
glance through the FAX to determine whether or not he received a
complete dump, and if necessary have it analyzed.
