NV/6000 : TimeOut Value of SNMP Request

ITEM: RS4000016653

**************> QUESTION level 1 --> level 2 SPECIALIST <**************
Our customer using NV/6000 V2R1. They have a trouble that NV couldn't
find new nodes added to NW.
They check netmon.trace with Mask 63 and find that SNMP Request to the
Router is in same segument to target(new) node are timed out.
They set TimeOutValue of SNMP Request 60 seconds in ovsnmp.conf file.
But in netmon.trace, netmon had send SNMP Request with timeout=2 to the
Router.
By the way, snmpwalk command and xnmbrowser are seemed to use 60s as
TimeOutValue.
Man(ovsnmp.conf) saied that "The ovsnmp and nvsnmp libraries and
all AIX NetView/6000 Version 2 applications use this file to determine
the parameters to use for SNMP requests."

Does the netmon use TimeOutValue in ovsnmp.conf with SNMP Request(as
new nodes polling or config check polling) ?
Should we think above symptom as trouble ?

Thanks and regards.

I will check with development -- but, I don't think you should view it
as a problem.... if it is working ok... It may not be working as the
documentation says, but if you get into a situation where you check
traces, etc. you will have to upgrade to at least V3 to get people in
development to move things up in priority. In any case, I will check
with development and get back to you.

I guess that if we traced any product we would find a lot of
inconsisten-

From development:
Dave,

Three things.

1) I know that netmon takes polling intervals "under advisement" rather
than as the law. netmon will take liberties with polling intervals
to improve performance. For instance, if a node has a timeout of 5s
and a retry of 3 times, netmon might make the timeout for the
first 2 attempts 1 second instead of 5 seconds. If the first two
attempts time out, then netmon will make the timeout for the
last try 5 full seconds. This improves performance greatly.

2) The customer should upgrade to V3.

3) As you suggested, trace data is really meant for development
debugging
purposes, and is probably not recommended for everyday customer
   use.
