OVwAlertMsg() error:OVw APP NOT FOUND
ITEM: RS4000016652
**************> QUESTION level 1 --> level 2 SPECIALIST <**************
We made some application using NV/6000 V2.1 APIs.
Our application calls OVwAlertMsg() to send message to nvevents.
Our application abend calling OVwAlertMsg(), and error code was 1, it
means "OVw_APP_NOT_FOUND". Programmers Reference says "There is no
ovw application running that is dispatching alert messages"
But the time the trouble was occured, trapd and nvevents were running.
We want to know what's the "ovw application running that is dis-
patching alert messages", and why these error was occured.
Thanks and regards.

CAN I ASK THIS QUESTION AGAIN ?
I HAD WRITTEN SAMPLE PROGRAM THAT CALL OVWALERTMSG() AND HANDLE ITS
ERROR CODE.
I TRIED TO EXEC THIS PROGRAM WITH STOPPING NVEVENTS, TRAPD, PMD AND
OVESMD. BUT OVWALERTMSG() HAD NEVER RETURNED ERROR CODE 1.
PROGRAMMERS REFERENCE SAYS "WHEN THERE IS NO APPLICATION RUNNING THAT
IS DISPATCHIG ALERT MESSAGES". WHAT ARE THE "APPLICATION" SPECIFICALLY
THANKS AND REGARDS.

I checked with Rob Macgregor and he confirms that, in our opinion,
you did not have an EUI (ovw) running.

Sorry for my insufficient explanation, but I have an ovw running.
I got this error when ovw starting and system (ovw) is very busy.
I want to know what are the conditions to success OVwAlertMsg ( in
other
words, to not return error from OVwAlertMsg ).
If ths OVwAlertMsg returns error, our application is terminated.
I have registered the application to *.reg and enabled to restart from
menu of NV. But the application terminated again when calling
OVwAlertMsg. In this case, ovw is not busy.
If you like, let me know about mechanism of message dispatching.
Thanks in advance.

I will check with development. I have seen situations where it ended
up necessary to take the EUI down/up to recover from error situations
caused by (for example) a time-out to a paricular call.
I will let you know if there are some hints.
It could be you are headed down a product-defect (PMR) path. We see.

From/to development: (I will close this and assume that you will
re-open
it if you have more info. Or, if you want, send the sample application
to me: SHOGREN at WTSCPOK and let me see if I can reproduce your
situation????? (We are on NetView for AIX V4, but that should not
matter)
Dave,
I looked at the code and it seems as though you will get this error
message if there is no application currently registered to receive
ovw alerts (via the OVwAddAlertCallback() function). I would
have the customer check to see if they have any such applications
(noting that the Programmer's Reference says that a program that
registers for the events can not also generate them).
From Dave:
I assumed, based upon their question, that they had applications
running which would satisfy their generated event; or, if they had
an EUI running that ovevent would satisfy it -- but, perhaps they get
the error when things are not started yet. We see.
