NetView for AIX : NewNode Discovery
ITEM: RS4000016651
**************> QUESTION level 1 --> level 2 SPECIALIST <**************
Our Customer is managing Large NW. And we have had a trouble that NV
for
sometimes found wrong NW.
Our customer use adress 10.0.0.0(class A) with subnetmask its range is
255.255.255.0 to 255.255.255.240 .NV sometimes add "10.0.0.0" NW toMap.
We list ALL Interface of Router to seedfile because we wish to "manage"
all subnetwork automatically.
We had get one suggestion from Development that if NV failed to get MIB
value from node, NV took a wrong guess on the subnetmask .
But we want to know more detail of "New Node discovery" and "Add
Network
to solve our trouble.
Q1.
Whats the conditions that branch to "New SubNet Add" proc ?
We guess that if NV failed to get MIB value from the any nodes on the
seedfile, NV judge the node belongs to 10.0.0.0 NW . Is it collect ?
Q2.
Does the NV get information about SubNetMask only from MIB table , or
use ICMP at the same time ?
Q3.
Our customer is using NV/6000 V2R1. They have a plan to migrate NV
to V4R1. And They want to know if does V4R1 add incllect NW on
same condition to V2R1 .
Best Regards.

Imanishi-san,
I will check with development and see what they come back with. Thanks
for making the questions quite specific -- that should help in getting
answers.
I suspect that the answer to your Q3. will be that this area is not
changed in V3 or V4.
However, let's see what development responds with.

Imanishi-san,
Development came back very quickly on this. Here is their response.
A1.
Yes, if NV can not get the information from the MIB it
guesses what the mask is. In this case it assumes a
Class A network based on the ip address (10.x.x.x)
A2.
Only from MIB. It does, at times, do an ICMP mask request
but only for verification rather than during creation time.
A3.
V4 does the same thing. Actually you only need 1 interface
of the router in the seedfile. Then all interfaces and
networks off that router get managed. Also, you should only
have SNMP devices in the seedfile.
