**************> QUESTION level 1 --> level 2 SPECIALIST <**************
Hi, folks.
I HAVE following QUESTIONS FOR A LARGE FILE(> 2GB) ENABLE FILE SYSTEM.
1) Does a larg file enable file system support Disk Striping ?
If it supports, how large is a block size ? Is it 4kb?
2) Does a fortran program manipulate large file (>2GB) ?
If it can, could you tell me how to write a program ?
Are there any options or functions to use large file ?
ARE THeRE ANY RESTrICtIONS TO USE FORTRAN ?
3) Now, I know tar and cpio commands dO NOT SUPPORT LARG FILE .
However Unix95 specification does not support it,
are there any plan for these commands to support large file ?
Could you tell me the above questions?
Thanks and Regards.

Here is the answers to some of your questions. I will let our Language
group comment on your Fortran questions.
1) Disk Striping is at the logical volume level and and not at the
file system level. Logical volumes and file systems can be
created larger than 2GB at 4.2 with stripping.
3) "Tar" and "cpio" do not support large files since there are strict
standards that any implementation of tar and cpio must adhere to for
any implementation of UNIX. These standards enforce the
limitation. Therefore, AIX has designed it's own archive
command called "backup". It is this "backup" format that is
utilized by mksysb and allows for >2GB files to be archived.
Your other questions are being researched. Please wait for an answer.

Response:
2) The current version of Fortran V3 does not support large files.
The new version XL Fortran V4 5765-658 will be available July 26
on tape and Aug 16,1996 on cdrom.

Thank you for your response.
May I ask you again?
According to your answer, I thought the following ideas.
1) There is no relation between file system's block size and disk
strip-
ings. The block size can be set with "mkfs" command when a file system
is created.
3)There are no plans for tar and cpio commands to support larg file
until the new implementation will be changed.
And there are no ways to migrate large files from AIX to another
UNIXs.
Are my ideas correct ?
Thanks and Regards.

Response:
Action: Question 1 is not really relevant. Disk striping is
implemented either at the LVM level OR at the RAID unit level. The
filesystem is unaware that any kind of striping is occuring, whether
it is BIG_FILE enabled, or otherwise. The stripe block size is
whatever you choose the block size to be either when setting up the
initial LV or when setting up the RAID unit.
3) We cannot answer whether other versions of UNIX will support
large files.
